The unique mosaic decoration of the palace of the Russian tsars in Tsarskoye Selo near St. Petersburg was made in Germany from amber. Amber cabinet was presented to Emperor Peter the Great. Later the cabinet was enlarged, gilded details and stone mosaics were added. During World War II, amber jewelry was destroyed or stolen by the Nazis during the occupation.
in 2003, the Amber Room was completely restored by Russian masters.

"Virgin and Child between Archangels Michael and Gabriel" (6th - 7th century Mosaic)

The mosaic in the apse of the Church of Angeloktistos is the most important of the mural mosaics of the Early Christian period survived in Cyprus. The Virgin is depicted in a gold background standing on a footstool decorated with precious stones and holding Christ in her left arm. On the side, the two Archangels Michael and Gabriel are advancing in adoration. To the right of the Virgin St. Michael is depicted, with a beautiful juvenile face holding the sphere in his right hand and the staff in his left hand. Unfortunately most of his body has been destroyed. To the left of the Virgin St. Gabriel is depicted in an excellent state of preservation. Like St. Michael he holds the sphere in his right hand and the staff on his left hand. The aisles of St. Gabriel are rendered like the peacock's feathers, and betray an oriental influence to the mosaic which otherwise is full of hellenistic grace. Despite the frontal attitude of the Virgin, the mosaic is not static. The representation of Christ in a three-quarter attitude and the almost imperceptible forward movement of the right food of the Virgin combined with the advancing movement of the Archangels fill the whole scene with life.
