The stamp set depicts the mosaic of Vichten, dated from 240 AD, which shows in its main area the mythological and literary subject of the nine Muses: Clio (Muse of history), Euterpe (Muse of music and lyric poetry), Thalie (Muse of comedy), Melpomène (Muse of tragedy), Terpsichore (Muse of dance and dramatic choirs), Erato (Muse of love poetry), Polymnie (Muse of choir singing and harmony), Uranie (Muse of astronomy), Calliope (Muse of epic elegiac poetry), in the company of the prince of poets, Homer.

The Triumph of Dionysus - Algeria, 1980

THe "Triumph of Dionysos" mosaic from Setif, Algeria shows a triumphal procession to celebrate the god's conquest of India. It shows Dionysus in a tiger-drawn chariot, surrounded by maenads and satyrs. Several exotic animals are depicted including tigers, elephants, camels, lion and the only known Roman period North African portrayal of a giraffe.

Moscow metro stations are traditionally decorated with the best artists and designers. Many stations have mosaic decorations. One of the new stations "Maryina Roshcha"(Grove) stations is decorated with mosaics depicting a 15th-century church in honor of St. Tryphon

Bignor Mosaic
The Roman villa at Bignor, West Sussex, discovered in 1811 during ploughing, has some of the finest preserved mosaics from Roman Britain. The mosaic featured on the stamp (issued on June 18th) depicts a female head usually identified as the Roman goddess Venus.
