Amazing..i could not find them either..they were similar to the APS founded in 1894...had circuit books similar to APS and now there is no record(except in the memory of senior philatelists...someone will have some input on them I am certain !! |

Am I just nuts (Don't answer that!) or did they get absorbed by the APS somewhere way back yonder? There's nothing mentioned in the APS History section on their website, but I swear I remember hearing or reading that somewhere. |

Greg, I think they just faded away like so many other societies and clubs due to lack of membership and support. |

Stamperdude I think you are correct..i think the members and officers had a falling out...sound familiar ??? As far as being absorbed by the APS I am sure some of the SPA members then joinned the APS...i remember reading somewhere that the SPA was by and large a Southern organization but the address of the Sales division is Lemont , Pennsylvania 16851 ! |

Well, heck! Apparently they were right in my backyard: Asheville, NC is 1 hour east; Great Smokies Nat'l Park is 20 minutes north... Quote:
On August 26, 1937, a souvenir sheet was issued to mark the annual convention of the Society of Philatelic Americans, held in Asheville, North Carolina on August 26-28. The imperforate sheet reproduced the 10-cent National Parks stamp of 1934 in blue green color rather than the original gray-black. The stamp shows a scene from Great Smoky Mountains National Park, located near Asheville. The stamp is surrounded by inscriptions giving the date and place of the convention, as well as authorization and production information for the issue.

Quote: Kansas Nebraska overprints Sounds like a great idea for a new thread. Could you possibly scan that description and post it? I should probably take a look at my Kansas~Nebraska too. Kirk |

Hello. My father, the late Claude W. Christenson, Jr., was a member of the Society of Philatelic Americans. He was also President of the Des Moines Philatelic Society, 1946-47, and was also 2nd Vice-President of the Trans-Mississippi Philatelic Society in 1956-57. My Grandfather, C.W. Christenson, Sr., was also President of the Des Moines Philatelic Society, 1952-53. My dad attended the SPA convention in Chicago in 1938, and I still have his badge, below: |
