Are these the genuine? I don't know how to tell the difference between the genuine and fake stamps; do you?

Crete is a new area for me Keith, I had an uneasy feeling when I bought them
that they may not be kosher. (but I had to have them :)
Then the paper difference put up a flag.
I need to kick tyres on the web.
I have low res scans of the forgeries of the Therisso issues,
so I know the knaves had been at work with Crete.

I know that forgeries exist for those issues. But I don't have any info on how to distinguish.

Klaseboer's entry looks different, but he says that he isn't certain that his are genuine. The shading lines and representation of George's hair are much more defined on his as opposed to these. I can't say which are genuine.

I would have purchased the Crete enslaved, too.

I found nothing definitive, but I did find a reference to an article on 1905 Crete revolutionary stamps in the March, 2000 issue of American Philatelist.

Anyone able to help with more info, based on that headstart?

I had forgotten that it was in Varro Tyler's book. His first edition was serialized in Linn's, so I didn't purchase it. The revised edition is a little above my limit (yeah, I'm a cheapskate; it's really not that expensive and it's a very good book).

Oh, I wouldn't say cheapskate khj, more like prudent.
I like the idea of "tear sheets", but I am not aware of how they negotiate copyright.
They seem an excellent, and wise route to securing special interest information, inexpensively.

Lets bring this one back to life and see if anyone can give us the spotting features for the forgeries. Here is Crete enslaved.





(By the way, this particular issue is not in Varro Tyler's book. The two Crete issues he addresses are British Admin and Therison.)

The two King George stamps are forgeries.

The 20 lepta stamp in the last post is a reprint.

I'd need sharper scans to be sure on the other four stamps although the 5 and 20 lepta stamps may be genuine or reprints and the other two look like forgeries.

Alrighty, then. I'll go scan George.

I have the March 2000 American Philatelist. It says the forgeries were actually printed by the printer of the originals!

The originals are usually on good quality white paper, the forgeries on "brownish and cheaper". On the woman stamps, the originals have a thick line between the frame at the top and the frame containing the circle with the woman, while on the reprints it is two thin lines. On the George stamps the right frame line in the top is single, on the forgeries it is double.
