Merry Christmas Canyoneer - great stamps - very understated festive cheer on the stamps back in those days!

Lucky man Rob041256, a beautiful part of the world and one of the first places Santa would have visited as he made his way across Australia.

Hi fairdinkumstamps

It's been quite hot at the beach lately, and Santa was seen at the Bondi Beach Hotel wearing a pair of speedos and downing a few pints of beer during the day, and took off at dusk.

Too err, is to be human.
Australian Aerogramme, showing Christmas Angel, but in fact the Durer
"Doomsday Angel"

Durer again pops up, in 1970 "original Artwork" by Beasley
should it be ...."After Durer" ? (Triptych)
Author : David Plummer.

Link to a blog with an image of the 'Doomsday Angel' on Durer's woodcut that was used on the 1974 Aerogramme mentioned above:

Rod222, could you please provide a link to the original article that discusses the correlation between the 1970 stamp and Durer? I can see Durer's 'Holy Family' online but it is not the same painting.

Thanks for the link FDS !
had not seen Durer's "Whore of Babylon" prior.
Interesting.

Unable to find a colour image of Durer's in the Munich Museum.
Seems rather obscure.

The Albrecht Dürer woodblock print referred to above is really wonderful, and the images we can post in this forum do not do it justice. If you want to look at a better picture, use this link to the Arthistory Project:

Copies are in various museums, and one was sold recently by Christies. The aerogramme does look "Christmas" if you did not know the story behind the angel.

Can anyone find the triptych used as inspiration for the 1970 stamp online?
