It depends what you mean by " study". Most, if not all, of these seem to be the issue with letters in each corner, in which case, unless you're interested in postmarks, the main interest is the plate number at each side of the design. Enjoy!

If these all have letters in each corner, they all have printed plate numbers, which will be more or less easy to see. You can try to reconstruct plates if you have sufficient of the same number, although you'd typically need thousands of stamps to do that. Some here have an interest in postmarks.

Good afternoon mottaz, you seem to be in need of a little help with regards to the British Victorian numerical postal cancellations.

From 1840 up until 1844 the type of cancellation for postage stamps was known as the maltese cross, but from 1844 a numerical cancellation was introduced.

A compilation of these numbers have been made so that you can identify them as to where they were posted from within in the UK, further cancellations were also made abroad with the use of letters and numbers.

The penny red plates you wish to study were first issued on the 1st of April 1864 and was in use for many years.

Other than the plate numbers and the cancellations another thing to look for would be the inverted watermark varieties as an added incentive.

I've always thought that when these plates were being laid down the stamps did not have adequate spacing between them and therefore a nicely centred copy is very difficult to find.

Here is a mint block of 4 from plate 199, found to be typically off centre.

Here is one that is more centralised printed from plate 221, and consequently more sought after.

May I suggest that you visit the Great Britain philatelic societies library, as there is a free article on the subject of numerical cancellations for the period you need.

https://www.gbps.org.uk/information/po-numbers/

I am sure that this will help you to complete any study that you may have in mind. WM
