-The notation 'off' means an offset printing (or ink transfer) on the back of the (right-hand four mostly) stamps.
-The notation '2dots' means two extra small blue dots inside the wave spiral to the right of the otter mother on the stamp in position 2, (row 1, column 2).
-Selvedge widths are in millimeters, 6.4 mm or 8.2 mm or ? (if I am told narrow or wide I assume 6.4 or 8.2).

Marine Wildlife Booklet Varieties

The Canada-Sweden joint issue of Marine Wildlife, issued May 13, has produced a few interesting booklet pane varieties.

The stamps were printed in Sweden. As is typical of Swedish booklets, blue cylinder numbers and black 6-digit control numbers are printed on the right-hand selvedge of specific panes (the interval for these numbers is not known).

In addition a 2x10mm black counting "tab" is found at the lower right of the front cover on every 50th (?) booklet. Illustrated are those examples seen so far.

I have also seen the cover counting tab with a 6-digit control number on the pane selvedge (scarce?). What about the counting tab with a blue 1 or blue 2, or better yet (and the most elusive), a counting tab with a blue 1 or blue 2 AND a 6-digit control number ... does such an item exist?

I just picked up more of these today, no numbers on the selvage of mine though :/

The paper is somewhat flimsy, extra care is needed when removing them for use.

I picked up a blue #1 and #2 plus a black control number. I got them at a franchise post office, and the clerk had 20 booklets. The other 17 were blank, so maybe each variety is 1 out of 20.

Cool Bee See.

I haven't bought mine yet but the clerk is holding them (I hope) for me. In about 25 booklets there were a blue 1, a blue 2, a blue 2 with black 6 digit control, a booklet with the control on the front (1 - 50) and I think another 2. I forget.

I actually called her when I got home and, out of breat, asked her to please save them for me and don not sell them to others (giving her a good chuckle as she knows me). She also told me that because of inventory (having to count them) the other pack of booklets (sealed) was in the safe and would be opened when the first pack was gone.

Oh my, I felt so great to be able to get one of the control marks on the front (and carried over to the back also I might add) booklets and some of the others. The clerk let me (the only person she would let do this she said ) take the entire opened stock and look through it while she looked after other customers. Talk about customer service! And of course this makes me want to go there more often and spend even more on stamps. Do you think she is doing that on purpose?

When I get mine in a week or so I will post pics.

Oh, a thought, the booklet with the control mark on the front/back did not have any numbers on the selvedge inside. Blank it was.

Thanks for that information Puzzler. So I guess they come in packs of 25? I will check this week after the holiday, at the local RPO (Retail Post Office) - they always let me sort through stuff too.

May 20 update:
We have a report that the counting tab AND blue 1 exist, and that the most elusive, the counting tab and blue 1 and 6-digit control number exists. Wow, enjoy the hunt!

I myself am still hunting.

I finally got to my RPO in Aldergrove BC near where I work. They only received one bundle of 25 of the Marine Booklets, and had about 15 left. I found a "1" and a "2", that is it. They may order more.

I have a bunch of franchise post offices around here and checked out a second one today but they only had a blue 1 and a 6-digit one. There was another blue 1 but they had had it scotch-taped to the wall to display it so I left that.

I mistakenly asked her if the booklets came in a pack of 50 and she just said yes. I should have asked what size pack they came in. She was nice though and looked at the ones under the two counter displays and hanging on the wall for me also. No more in safe but, as you say, may order more. She said that when they order stamps months ahead of time they order the amount they think they will use.

The 1st post office had two packs and the second just one. I know of one kind of hidden away from the madding crowd a bit (of collectors anyway) so will visit that tomorrow.

I see most folks on eBay / Delcampe are not saying anything about these yet. Usually they jump on a new thing.

The six digit numbers on the two that have those so far were 024470 and 094608 with a blue 2, different again from the three different ones shown on Adminware. I wonder if they are all different and only change if they ever had a second printing?

Anyone have a Sweden specialized catalogue that explains these numbers and marks for the Swedish issues from years ago? These Canadian stamps were printed in Sweden by the way.

I am now thinking I should have kept mum about the varieties as much as I could so that other collectors in the area don't hear about it and scoot around to different post offices before I get there. It's vicious out there! Ambushes next to the letter box, disguises, people saying they just want to take my picture to making a Picture Postage stamp and even worse and more horrendous and horrible things I can't mention in polite company.

I will make a list of those black control numbers and post it here.

Ah Puzzler, the Philatelists are a rough crowd in Halifax eh? I was all to myself in Aldergrove and the clerk just gave me the pile of booklets and asked me to take what I wanted.

Oh, you just don't know the half of it! It's the perfiners against the blockheads and the used and abused rummaging through the waste paper baskets for that elusive find against the daisy fresh folks jostling at the counter.

And then there are those lurking about in sunglasses and ear phone communicators trying to pretend they are just browsing in the vitamin supplements aisle.

The little old ladies are the worst with their canes and seemingly over large purses. Some days when I come out of the drug stores I just have to have an ice cream cone and forget about it all. Like today. And maybe tomorrow too.

A new adventure every day here in Halifax!

Ha, good news.

I can go in to the Post Office, where I have known the Post Mistress for years, on Sunday when they are only open half a day and not too busy.

She will let me go through the sealed bundle of fifty she has that has two packs of 25, each pack wrapped in a strip of brown paper, in that bundle and record what control numbers and/or counting tabs occur when. That Post Office had ordered two bundles originally from Canada Post. Lucky for me.

Perhaps I can determine from this accounting if these control numbers occur in a regular pattern or not (she thinks it is random). I will also look for any other info or markings on the bundle or packs (her words).
