Transkei

FIRST Postage STAMPS ISSUED 26 October 1976.

CURRENCY As South Africa.

Territories under the protection of Cape Colony in 1858-65, then
abandoned. Annexed to the Colony in 1879-84, but reserved for
it's black population from 1913.

Transkei received internal self-government from South Africa in
1963 and was made an independent republic on 26 October 1976.
It was not recognized by the UN or the UPU, but its stamps were
accepted as valid for international mail.

The territory was reincorporated into the RSA on 27 April 1994.
The Transkei Postal Service continued with RSA adhesives until
June 1996 when it was fully incorporated into the RSA system.

The beautiful ladies of Transkei, and their Chapeaux.

My past coming back to haunt me :)

On a related note, I recently gave away a huge box of First Day Covers from all four SA Homelands as well as the Republic of South Africa.

During the 80's and 90's my father had a subscription to these from the SA Post Office. He must have spent a small fortune over the years, and now they are worth almost nothing. They were just taking up valuable space and not worth selling.

Wow! Clive, a surprise there

But tinged with sadness,
they come with history, good or bad, but consider them worthless?,
that's disappointing.
Relieved that you gave them away rather than trashing, as some are prone to do.

PS: Miss very much, the counsel of Blair Stannard, a wise and generous fellow.
