Japan 10 April 1971 / 25th Anniversary of Women's Suffrage / design: Takao Yamanouchi I didn't know that until 1946 women didn't have right to vote in Japan... and this stamp is designed by a man (woman stamp designer doesn't exist up to late 1980s). Thank you KuoLC and other contributors, for me to start learning on this subject. Great one! |

Quote: Finland 1996 EUROPA The stamp commemorates the Parliament Act in 1906 which established the unicameral parliament of Finland and granted both women and men the right to vote and stand for election. Finland was the first country to do that; but as to the vote, it was second. New Zealand allowed women to vote (not hold office) beginning in 1893. Kate Sheppard was the leading light of the New Zealand women's suffrage movement. In recent years her contribution to New Zealand's identity has been acknowledged on the $10 note as well as the 2008 stamp shown above. She died on 13 July 1934, a year after the first woman MP, Labour's Elizabeth McCombs, entered Parliament. |
