How Do You Store Oversized Items ?

In the thread below, the issue of storing over-sized items came up.
I am curious how people deal with storing things like : Revenue Documents, Full sheets of stamps, large covers, large collateral pieces, etc ...

I would define over-sized, for myself, as the item being larger than a Vario-1 or Hagner-1 page, but I am interested in hearing any "over-sized" issue however one might define it.

Various companies make albums designed for sheets. Lighthouse makes the large Kanzlei album for documents.

I use the Itoya Art Profolios to house my collection of Postmaster commissions.

These Art Profolios come in a variety of sizes from 9x12 to 18x24. They have two formats, one for 24 documents (12 double side pages) or 48 documents.

Search for them on eBay for examples of sizes and costs.

These are available at my local Hobby Lobby store in some of the smaller sizes. Michael's also. Or eBay. Pricing varies.

I probably have 20 of these in different sizes. The only issue is they are hard to store without some special shelving because of their size.

Most oversized items I first place them in one of the clear archival sleeves like used for postal covers, which Hobby Lobby sells in many sizes (as do several eBay sellers) This provides some support while inserting the documents when adding or removing them from the Itoya pages

I would like to graciously thank those collectors who avoid everything larger than 8.5x11 and leave such wonderful items to the rest of us.
Odd how automobile or bottle or brick or beer can collectors do not seem to have these same blinders on. Some of the most incredible collectibles in every hobby are large or 3-dimensional. Happily as mml notes the art world has solved many of the storage challenges for large flat/paper items.
One of the best purchases I ever made for storing things was a used blueprint cabinet found at an auction of a retired architect. The drawers are slightly larger than 30"x40" which works for maps, posters, newspapers, sheet music, rocks, and even a large glass serving tray! Cool, dark, dry, and dustproof.

And it works great for riker trays of small items!

Those Art Profolios look promising for a few things I have. Thanks. My wife is always dragging me to Michaels and Hobby Lobby - now I have something to look for.

I also use the Itoya portfolios extensively, particularly for stocks and bonds, as well as artworks on paper. I note that the 18x24 portfolios can get quite heavy.

p.s. I have bought the smaller sizes directly from Michael's at times (watch for sale and discount opportunities); they are also widely available online.

The bigger problem that I have is odd sized taxpaid revenues. Safe makes a large horizontal format stock book https://www.safepub.com/product/spe...ontal-album/ with different page formats from 1 large pocket to 8 strips that works well for many of the taxpaid strips



however the pages are slightly too small for the longest of the cigar strip taxpaids - the 4 strip pages are 397mm (about 15-5/8").

I just ordered (but have not received yet) an 11x17 binder and slipcase from Archival Methods.

The pages are a full 17" so should hold the cigar strip taxpaids; however, the pages are only available in single pocket format. Thus, I'm trying to figure out the best way to mount the taxpaids to the insert pages. Strip stamp mounts are not long enough. I would prefer not to use hinges. I could try mounting corners, with additional support mounts on the bottom.

Won't these fit on pages with vertical, rather than horizontal, pockets?

I'm sure they could - but where do I find pages with 17" vertical pockets?

Eek! Hadn't realised that they were so oversized.

A rack for press sheets. I will always remember this since I jammed my finger building it and feel the affects at times.
