@stallzer - those are nice covers.
On the Halifax one, the postal usage/rate/etc all appears ok to me, although typically one would see a 5c prepayment when going steamer via Boston. By land, it was 10c to Nova Scotia, while by Cunard steamer it was 5c. So even though its endorsed to go steamer via Boston (5c), it looks like it was pre-paid 10c just in case it went by land....all not unreasonable.
What Scott# did you submit the 3c stamps as (color) ?

Quote: What Scott# did you submit the 3c stamps as (color) ? I tried to go the cheapest route and submitted as 3x Scott 65. On the application I asked to identify the shades / colors and included a check for $35. They sent me an invoice for an additional $120.00 On their invoice they did not state their opinion but the valuation they used for the cover was North of $1500 so thinking their opinion is one of the pink shades. Sadly they don't take CC's for payment so had to mail them a check. Sent it over a week ago so expecting the results within a week or so. |

@Al - the Wells Fargo stamps are reversed. They are a separated pair - fit together perfectly (opposite of how I have them scanned here): 36-37R1L (again, reversed in the scan). The marking overlaps perfectly too, but the stamps were affixed as singles on the cover with 36 on top and overlapping a little on the left side of 37. The two other Wells-Fargo off-cover stamps I have: #26: WFE-104: Three Lines of Text, Date Centered, Type 11-08 Blue, Unknown Town #26: Wells Fargo COLLECT handstamp - Simpson's p.351 Rarity 2 - I could not find this one in my Express Company reference book. I imagine is is not common used as a cancellation. |

Quote: They sent me an invoice for an additional $120.00 @stallzer - Heh, when paying more can be a good thing. The stamps are an early use and have a pinkish hue from your scan. Thank the sender for adding 2 extra possibly valuable 3c stamps when he didn't have to. Good luck and let us know how it turns out ! |

Here is an example of the 10c rate by land to Halifax. This is actually a double 10c rate - thus 20c, by land, as opposed to Cunard steamer from Boston. The 10c stamps are Scott #14, Ty II. |

A nice 3c Nesbitt entire, uprated by a strip of three 1c Ty IV (9), 6-8L1L, showing top sheet margin. This pays the double 3c rate from Terre Haute to Germantown, OH. Ex-Lehman, Haas |

Well, the topic says 1851-61 era. Doesn't say that it has to be a cancellation on a stamp. Here's some markings on a cover with a coin: |

If you're looking for a 64a on cover, you are in luck, as there are 4 of them up for auction at Cherrystone Jan 21 sale 0126 lots 13-16. Frankly I like the color of stallzer's trio of pinks better than any of these 4 (based on the scans in the auction catalog), but 3 of Cherrystone's are also patriotics, so there's that. |

One subject that often gets omitted in postal history arenas is that of printed matter. The rate to send a circular to Western Europe was 2c, often paid with two 1c stamps. I'll post a few examples. To Liverpool - 1c Ty II (7) 93-94R2. 93R is the big double transfer in the bust. Rated 2 pence due. To Liverpool - 1c Ty IV (9). |
