Hi bobby131313 --

Thank you for the information on how the new image uploader sizes files.

Given that the long side is fixed at 1400 pixels -- I agree that the resolution should be fine for most all single stamps and pairs.

As a test -- I am uploading a 1200DPI JPG format file of a cropped single stamp to this post -- just to see how the converted WEBP file looks -- and also so that I can test downloading the WEBP file and converting back to a JPG format file.

Thanks again for the improved image uploader and for the technical info on how the uploader resizes the files.

Regards // ioagoa

This is position 71R5L -- Scott #11A -- originally scanned at 1200DPI JPG format. Original file size was around 1.2MB.

Why are you worried about downloading converting it back?

What I have noticed is that large MB files are now resized
to very small, basically degraded images.
Very obvious in for example uploading FDCs as below.

I scanned the FDC at 800dpi and size was 3MB

Using new uploader it resized to 33.7KB wheras with the old Image Optimizer
I would get at least 300 KB. Big difference.

On the other hand smaller KB files actually in many cases get uploaded
way above the previous max. 300KB

The last stamp above came in at 378.9KB much higher than previously possible

Hi bobby131313 --

Not a big deal -- but many times when a member asks for plating help on the 1851 3c threads -- I always download the image to do the plating work. Also -- if the member is posting a stamp that I want to keep for plating reference purposes, it is nice to download the image and save it to my plating reference data set.

As a test -- from my prior post --

-- The original JPG source file was 1200 x 1410 pixels -- around 1.2MB

-- The converted WEBP file was 1191 x 1400 pixels -- 200KB

-- No problem converting the WEBP file back to JPG format -- and no loss of resolution. File size of the downloaded WEBP file after conversion back to JPG format with "best quality" setting in Apple's "Preview" app was 1.5MB -- so slightly larger than the original source file.

Nice!

That's because it's almost all the same color. It's a big difference in KB, not a big difference in how it looks. I find it really hard to believe that you can see anything in your original image that you can't see in the uploaded image.

It's not just about size either. I got tired of watching new members give up and leave with the old method.

I've had no other reports of this happening on either forum with thousands of images uploaded on the new uploader.

Is there any way to scale images, e.g., by setting a width, so images in a post or thread can be shown in relative size?

The uploader will not adjust the pixel dimensions if neither side exceeds 1400px.
