Valentine's Day Special: Here are images of "his and her" stamps depicting javelin throwers, both issued in 1959. Pierced hearts, anyone?

Male javelin thrower, a semi-postal (charity) stamp printed by photogravure, and issued for use in Ifni on November 23, 1959 for Stamp Day, Scott No. B45.


Female javelin thrower, designed by Czech artist Mario Stretti, combined engraved by Bohdan Roule and photogravure, and issued by Czechoslovakia on February 14, 1959, Scott No. 896.

Here is an image of an engraved stamp depicting a baseball player at bat, designed by Lee Keun-moon, and issued (South) Korea on September 4, 1982 to publicize the 27th World Amateur Baseball Championship Series, held in Seoul, Scott No. 1311.

Kumar Shri Ranjitsinhji (1872-1933) was the ruler of the Indian princely state of Nawanagar, and was also a Test cricketer who played for the English cricket team, and is widely regarded as one of the greatest batsmen of all time. Here is an image of a stamp depicting the sportsman maharaja batting, printed by photogravure, and issued by India on September 27, 1973 to commemorate his birth centenary, Scott No. 591, plus an image of an autographed card with a photograph of Kumar Shri Ranjitsinhji.

Elin Oihonna Kallio (1859-1927) was a pioneering Finnish gymnast who in 1876 founded the first Finnish association for female gymnasts. Here is an image of a stamp depicting a woman gymnast performing with a hoop in rhythmic gymnastics, designed by Finnish artist Olavi Vepsäläinen (1927-1993), engraved by Reijo Achrén, and issued by Finland on November 14, 1959 to commemorate Elin Kallio's birth centenary, Scott No. 365, Facit No. 517, plus a YouTube link to an entertaining rhythmic gymnastics hoop montage.
