Diamonds and trains both evoke adventure and romance. The harshly-beautiful and lonely desert landscapes of Namibia's south-western coast, where diamonds were discovered in 1908, add another dimension of mystique. The first diamonds were discovered through the initiative of a railway supervisor, who is reputed to have told his labourers to look out for 'pretty stones', leading to the first find. It is thus no surprise that trains and diamonds were interlinked from the outset of mining in Namibia. Mining in this area required innovation and great resolve, with transport through the desert one of the greatest challenges. Trains and railways soon became the main mode of carriage along a vast stretch of coastline between Lüderitzbucht and Bogenfels, with a variety of electric and fuel locomotives employed between 1908 and 1938.

The letters NAMIBIA are printed using the gold foil hot stamping.
