In the For What its Worth department, I tried it on an XP machine and it came through seamlessly. Pretty neat. |

Hello Quote: lithograving:Fernando I think you meant Denmark/Sweden/Norway since the Finns do not have a Viking heritage. You could also add Iceland though. Ohh, I understand now, why never found that on Finland. Thank you. About the list, I´m able to download on a excel file. Fernando Moscoso Ecuador Edit: Hey on the list, two Finland stamps Scott 481 and B4 |

wow.you guys/gals are great.i thought there would be alot of stamps devoted to Vikings but I never thought there might be a chance to find some with Norse gods on them.
also today I thought of a way to tie my farming topic with the Norse topic:
Thor the thunder god was also the god of farming I do believe

Someone here [lithograving?] said the Finns have no Viking heritage. I would like to know where you got that from. Do you have an historical basis for that statement? My father's parents both came from Finland. I am a Finn. Vikings were a ragtag bunch of nomads that came from everywhere including Finland. You can't pin it down to just 2 or 3 countries. Besides, the borders of the Scandinavian countries have changed. Land that was once Finland is now Sweden and even Russia. People in Sweden speak Finnish and are Finns. I have old Finnish books and artwork and some of the pictures sure look like Vikings to me. There is a Finnish epic poem/story called Kivella and in it are descriptions of Viking like roaming bands of men and heros. The port of Helsinki is right on the ocean. How could men of Finland NOT have joined up with Vikings? |

Hi nutmeg
Vikings whether from Norway, Sweden or Denmark shared the common Germanic language of Scandinavia, Proto-Norse. Finns and Estonians belong to the Finno-Ugric language family, distantly related to the Hungarian language.
The Vikings did appear in what is now Finland but mostly as raiders not settlers.
Now of course it's possible that some Finns joined up with some of these Vikings but that doesn't exactly make them Vikings or Danes or Norwegians or Swedes or Icelanders.
My neighbour was born in Finland, next time I see him I might just ask him if he considers himself a descendant of Vikings. |

Quote: Do you have an historical basis for that statement? Since I have had an interest in Scandinavian history and European in general I have read a few books which I'm sure you could also find in any library. But for a very brief introduction to your Finnish history check out Wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_FinlandHere is a quote from the article Quote: Contact between Sweden and what is now Finland was considerable even during pre-Christian times – the Vikings were known to Finns both due to their participation in commerce and plundering. There is no commonly accepted evidence of Viking settlement in the Finnish mainland, although some finds in Southern Ostrobothnia have caused controversy |

If you really want to know how much Viking blood the average Finn has then check out this site concering the genetic history of Europe. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Geneti...ry_of_EuropeThis quote might be of interest to you. Quote: A study in May 2009 [42] of 19 populations from Europe using 270,000 SNPs highlighted the genetic diversity or European populations corresponding to the northwest to southeast gradient and distinguished "four several distinct regions" within Europe:
* Finland, showing the greatest distance to the rest of Europeans. * the Baltic region (Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania), western Russia and eastern Poland. * Central and Western Europe. * Italy, "with the southern Italians being more distant".

Hello, good topic. Nutmeg, be proud of Finnish origins! Many nations in Europe envy them, it`s a rich country. But I have to agree with Lithograving. The Kalevala's (Kivella) central figures are not simple viking warriors. Veinemoinen`s favourite & most effective weapon were his words. His much more a poet, than a warrior. Ilmarinen is a hero, who with Weinemoinen travels far north after a magical item (a handmill), and they defeat a witch there, but he is also a craftsmen (a famous blacksmith). And the Kalevala greatly influenced J.R.R Tolkien (think of Gandalf- in many aspects Weinemoinen). The fact, that the Finns are not related to vikings, doesn`t mean they were no great warriors. And indeed, they're language is related to the Hungarian. And talking about relations: I assure you, that in the 10th century the Hungarian were doing the same, as vikings: not using longboats, but on horseback :)). Although genetically they are not related. As soon as I found stamps, I'll be back :) |

We are updating our master Viking list, It is not obligatory, but if you Scott people care to offer any Scott cat numbers to those here that are missing, it would be great. Just indicate the Bold Number on left then the corresponding scott number. We don't expect anybody to spend any substantial time just if you care to share a few :) |
