The folks with black ink could find the center of those Treasury stamps too!

@Russ. With all due respect that's a highly desirable strike on that 4c Trans Mississippi commem, but doesn't the absence of the date slug automatically disqualify it as a postal cancellation?

@597596. That giant jumbo 3c 1869 has got to be the Holy Grail of the first US pictorial set! Totally mind-blowing! Thanks for sharing!

Jinja8, There are lots of reasons why a stamp would get a postal cancel not containing a date, such as 3rd class or registered. (in reference to a posting by Russ of a 4 cent Trans Miss issue on page 3 of this thread) I am curious, why would you consider this *not* to be a postal cancel?

Stampcrow's post on page 33 shows a #65 with a patent cancel. Here is a similar cancel showing the full town mark. The intent of this cancel was to have the sharpened inner circle cut into the stamp and damage it to discourage its future reuse. Though it seldom actually cut into the stamp as intended, it may show the indented circle onto the back side. (Note: Some were patented, some were not, but they are generally called patent cancels.)

Please allow me to share some other nice cancels. Even not perfectly SOTN, all these stamps are classics cancelled abroad, hence the lack of perfectionism in the postmark is somewhat compensated by their position in postal history.

'Shanghai' postmark on German stamp

GC '5055' - Skikda, Algeria

'C' - Constantinople

'B01' - Alexandria, British P.O.

'Constantinople' - forerunner on German stamp

Anyone else into forerunners in here?

I'm playing around a little, curious about creating 'Digital collections' for some selected items (pulled from my main collection). Figured to make a trial album page on a few nice cancels. Some of them would qualify for this SOTN thread, so why not share with you guys? m

(The Yokohama still has sellers watermark from ebay, haven't done my own scan yet)
