Not sure exactly who handled the payment and cancellation.

Yes, this is considered fiscally used. I am sure you are aware that there are several distinct printings with varying scarcity/prices, though this is likely the 1939 issue. As a fiscal usage, I think this would be valued at a lot less than postally used; just how much, I don't know. There is a British Commonwealth revenue catalog by J. Barefoot Ltd. that would likely have a catalog price. Yours has a great strike and a clear origin and date so it has a lot going for it.

Carry on with this thread. I will look for more to add myself.

Albertville, Belgian Congo, now Kalemie:

This is a favor cancel but is the cancel used at the time.

Aden Camp, Aden:

Aden didn't have their own stamps until 1937 and used Indian stamps back to the 1860s. Something to look for if you ever encounter an old collection or a pile of older, common Indian stamps.

What looks like "1700" here is actually "17 OC(tober)".

Actually, Indian postage stamps were introduced in Adan as early as on Oct 1,1854 simultaneously with India and Myanmar following Article XXVIII of Indian Post Office Act 1854 (Act No. XVII of 1854) which was also applicable to Adan as it was under the postal administration of Mumbai Circle.

In the last quater of 1854, following quantities of Br. India 1854 stamps of 1854 ˝A, 1A and 4A lithographs and 2A typograph issues were supplied to Adan from Kolkata.

• ˝A: 8352
• 1A: 8544
• 2A: 240
• 4A: 396

But the earliest recorded cover with Indian stamps used in Adan, is from Mar 1855.

Here is an example of an early usage of Indian stamps in Adan, on an 1855 Adan-Mumbai cover franked with 2 Br. India 1854 4A Vic. head die II frame die I wide setting 2nd Printing imperf. bicolored lithograph (SG 19/Dawson and Smythies 10) with Robertshaw type 9/Graham type C2a/Lowe type C2/Proud type K1 124 cancels of Adan, and bearing Graham type HS8/Lowe type HS111/Proud type P4 tripartite rectangular Paid datestamp (dt. Oct 10,1855) of Adan in red and Giles BG3 Mumbai GPO receiving datestamp dt. Oct 23,1855.

The cover was carried by Peninsular and Oriental Steam Navigation Company contract mail steamer SS Norna.

Rate: 8A was the steam postage for letters from Adan to India for every 14.18gm (˝oz) or part if sent by Br. packets, the rate in effect from Oct 1,1854 to Dec 31,1855.

I'll put up one more from Switzerland before I do some from Australia later today.

Years ago bought a lot of Swiss stamps at a club auction and was lucky enough to get it. Many dealers source their material from these auctions and that night there were a whole bunch of lots from what appeared to be an estate that had been brought in.

All of the lots were sorted into countries and had prices marked in pounds, shillings, and pence on the pages so they hadn't been touched in a long, long time. No decimal prices at all. Pages and pages loaded with good stuff.

I ended up buying more than I expected as the dealers were just not interested, but not as much as I wanted as I hadn't brought much $$ with me. The next auction had more lots and had some good Austria!!

At the following auction the dealers bid like crazy on the remaining lots so I didn't get anything. Word must have leaked out.

I am still working though some of the stuff and went through part of the Swiss stamps last night. Pulled this one out of the stash.

The stamp has a nice almost complete 'ALTSTADTEN" (Old Town) cancel dated 23 X 89.

This stamp is a Zumstein 71B: a perf 9 1/2, 1 Franc denomination Standing Helvetia.

Unfortunately...................the stamp has a big fat hole in it as can be seen in the scan.

Oh well.

Looks nice from the front.

So a few stamps from Australia.

First up is a 20 shilling stamp from Broken Hill in New South Wales.

Broken Hill is a famous mining town so there were probably numerous stamps used for gold shipments.

The stamp has a BROKEN HILL MY 16 1900 SON cancel. SG cat number is 264c.

Next is a strip of three KGV 1 1/2d stamps with two cancels from a town called Dandenong. The stamps have two 7 SE 29 cancels.

You can read a short history of Dandenong in Wikipedia:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dandenong,_Victoria

It really doesn't say much about the place, but when we first moved here, it was a downtown area to be avoided after dark. Real estate prices back then were cheap and for a reason. Recently the state government has plowed a lot of money into the place and you can see some new buildings there.

Haven't been to the 'downtown' Dandenong area for years since the stamp club moved from the library so I don't know if the place is 'safe' at night now.

Moving further east from Dandenong will take you through a number of suburbs. Some good and some not so good.

One of the better ones is a place called Berwick. The suburb used to be really quiet with oak lined streets and houses on substantial sized lots. (1/2 acre or more).

With the huge increase in population in the Melbourne area, Berwick has seen its population explode. In 1991 the population was about 11,000; in 2001: 25,000; in 2016: 47,000, and the current estimate is well over 53,000.

The old houses on huge lots have been torn down, subdivided, and a huge number of townhouses built. The old country feel of the place has been destroyed. Houses and newer townhouses in the village area will set you back well over A$1 million or more.

If you haven't been to the area in the past few years you wouldn't believe the changes.

Berwick in Wikipedia:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Berwick,_Victoria

And now for the stamps.

Three singles and a pair all with SON cancels.

I particularly like the KGV 1d with its cancel and date of 17 MY 17:

And the final one I am putting up for today is the most recent purchase from the club's circuit books.

In fact, I am a little surprised that I was able to buy it given the quality of the stamp and strike. I would have thought that it would have been bought long before I got the books.

The stamp is 9d kangaroo with a 1 MY 29 cancel from Terang, Victoria. It is SG 108.

The stamp and cancel are outstanding. It just doesn't get any better!!!

Terang is a little town about 2 1/12 hours west of Melbourne. We might have driven though ages ago when we visited the 12 Apostles area.

Again from Wikipedia:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Terang

But a better site is the tourist one which has a lot of photos of the surrounding area:

From the US Great American series:

I went back through the whole thread to try not to repeat an issue or cancel and find that I repeated myself. Sorry about that.

hy-brasil,

Those small USA defs with SON cancels are nice. It is really hard to find small sized stamps with nice cancels.

In fact it is getting hard to find recent stamps with SON cancels.

Pretty much gave up on 'recent' New Zealand. Japan has a new wavy type part in their cancellations which is really ugly too.

In Australia you can still find some post offices that will either let you hand cancel by yourself or put on nice cancels for you, but then you have to watch out for it going through the machine and putting on one of those stinky machine type cancels.

Or even worse the dreaded pen through the stamps.

I used to buy lots of recent issues in Australia from a local licensed post office (LPO) when I was sending lots of packages to relatives overseas and the owner of the LPO would let me hand cancel the stamps and put them under plastic.

The owner changed and the new owner wouldn't let me do it anymore. Never been back and I don't send packages anymore so I guess it doesn't matter............

The 12/6 was the exact rate used for passport/visa fees, 1928 to late 1952. I've seen them cancelled on airline ticket folders, for one.

I'm guessing that this value was intended for the revenue/fiscal purposes noted above. Note that there was no George V 12/6 stamp inscribed POSTAGE/REVENUE but there was in the same design inscribed REVENUE/REVENUE.

And now we return you to your regular programming.

Customs cancel.

One block from Canada.

A block of four with a St. Hyacinthe CDS of OC 25 28. St. Hyacinthe is in Quebec.

The stamps re SG 274 or Scott C1.

Issue date of the stamp was Sept 21, 1928 so an early use.
