Vinman: As to the October 9th cover addressed to Joseph Hyde, Esq., at 115 Nassau St., New York City, he was the Assistant Treasurer and General Agent for the American Bible Society (ABS) located at that address and held that position from 1842 until "at least" 1855. This was taken from the heading of an 1852 ABS report: |

Here is my cover for October 11th. It is from York Sulphur Springs, PA to Rev. J.A Murray in Dillsburg, PA. Nice strike of a blue paid and numeral 5. There is a munuscript marking lower left front "P.M. Will please have this deliv immediatly." The enclosed letter is docketed Oct, 11, 1849 and it appears it was sent by Wm Gardner. The letter is requesting the reverend to visit a sick woman as soon as possible. |

* October 30th, 1903 Mr J.H. Tilton mailed from Newbury Vermont. It handsomely wears a US Scott #301 EKU is 1/17/03 so this stamp has only been use for about 9 months when this was applied to this cover and sent out. Amazing isn't it when you stop and think about it for a minute? .I sure think so

I like the check, ILS. I've been thinking of posting one on this thread, but the thought and the dates on the checks I have are never in synch! |

Not much to see on the back of this postcard except the postmark, and a high school girl's handwriting, but the front is interesting, at least to me. The house across the street in the center was my great aunt Becky's, she used to tell us kids how she and her husband rode horseback all the wall from Arkansas in 1877. She died in 1960 at the age of 99. Wonderfull lady, huge heart in her tiny body, she was 5' and weighed less than 100lbs. Broke her leg gardening when she was 90, and still tended the garden while she healed. She told us of the gun fight out in front of Halliday's Livery stable down at the end of the street to the left. That happened in the 1890's. The town was devestated in the O6 earthquake! First my postmark, which was posted four miles north at Manchester, Cal, the card is of Point Arena before 1910. The town. And the stable. The earthquake damgae. Halliday's was across the street from the red X. The Post Office was still standing! |
