Bill THANK YOU for looking up all that great information! Very kind of you and VERY much appreciated! -Jeff

O.K. Now for today's postmarked cover:~

Here is the whole unaltered image of the full cover to see the actual color of paper.

DECEMBER 10TH design of. 1875-'81 BARTON MARYLAND- PIEDMONT COAL & IRON CO.
BARTON ALLEGHENY CO., MD. In mu Scott specialized it only made mention of a few - Scott design number # U45 #U46 or #U45 (depending on the shape of his head) on cream stationery.

However the U44, U45 * U46 are te design of many examples. For instance:

- Design U44 could be one of ~ #U159, #U60,#161,#+162
- Design U45 could be one of ~ #U163, #U164, #U165, #U166, #167
- Design U46 could be one of ~ #U168, #U169, #U170, #U171

So you can probably see my frustration with these right? lol
Any help or assistance would be great and I am vbery thankful in advance. -Jeffrey

It does have a rather fanciful watermark in the paper. (Shown below). Taken with a Fuji FinePix S700 Digital Camera and the subject at hand is held obliquely to my desk lamp.

Scanned a@ 1200dpi to better show the postal design: {No manipulation at all}

Here, I thought that the Watermarks on these were just a little easier to make out in B&W so I attached the same images of them but cropped down, darkened a little bit and made into B&W images.

I apologize for the long post but I was just trying to correctky I identify all my postal stationery covers but thankfully most of mine aren't that difficult. :)

A brief history of the Deisel-Wemmer Company of Lima, Ohio:

Quote:
Lima had had a good cigar since 1884 when German immigrant Henry Deisel and his wife began hand-rolling cigars in his house. Deisel called them "Henry's Best" and they were apparently good enough that Deisel had to hire 10 men to help him keep up with demand. In 1888, Deisel's growing work force went on strike and he was forced to bring in partners, brothers Henry and William Wemmer, to deal with the effects of the strike. The now Deisel-Wemmer cigar company was burned out of or outgrew several locations over the next decade before moving into a new building on North Main Street near the Pennsylvania Railroad tracks at the turn of the century.

Here is the whole cropped out name: looks like some sort of prefix like ESQ. or C/O or something similar perhaps? That is what you were referring too correct? Can't decide if that second letter is an "long S" or an "F" or even "ej" or a letter "Y"? Maybe could even be a nick-name or a job title? Thank you anyway it really cheers me up and fascinates me to no end your superior research abilities & knowledge and, of course your Google-Fu.

I_L_S: I think I found the answer to the above posted cover. First, the name of the addressee is Mark Balderston and the community is Westtown, PA (two T's). In fact, I believe the "W.B.S" reference at the left side of the cover is probably referencing "Westtown Boys School".

The school is still in operation today, in West Chester, PA, and according to their website: "Westtown is believed to be the oldest, continuously operating coeducational boarding school in the country. Westtown School first welcomed students in May 1799."

In any case, if you refer to the bottom of page 144 at this link, the Class of 1907 had a graduate in one "Mark Balderston" of Colora, Maryland. Therefore, it's a reasonable guess that the CDS on the cover is that from Colora, Maryland!

George Washington.

If it is the Scott designated design number of U44, then it's probably Scott #161 OR if it is the Scott designated design number of U45 then it's probably Scott #U165.

I'm basing my guess at the cream color of the paper. But also has a pinkish hue to it also so I'm not entirely sure?

(I'm not real good with these but learning how to I.D. them)

The CDS on the above postcard is Jacksonville and St. Petersburg (FL) RPO. Actually, it was previously posted in this thread--although almost a year old now:

I love to see these old covers, only to realize that the addressee (in this case H.S. Crocker & Co.) is still in business today!

Quote:
As millions in gold and silver poured down from the Mother Lode and Nevada, San Francisco became a city almost overnight. It also became the center of the West Coast printing industry. In 1871, Crocker established its first printing and lithography plant in the City by the Golden Gate.

In 1885, Crocker erected a five-story plant, considered to be the finest commercial printing establishment in the West. Here we operated our own steam plant, selling power to other printers in the area.

Dec, 29th 1976, Centennial of the birth of Pau Casals (el Vendrell, Catalonia, 1876 - San Juan De Puerto rico, USA, 1973), a famous chelo player. Cacheted cover and pm from his hometown. It's also a FDC of the stamp.

A half day early this time but with a cover and a post card that was late.

Whitesboro, Cal. a small mill and shipping town on the Mendocino coast opened their post office Oct 11, 1881 and closed it on Dec 30, 1899. This cover bears Whitesboro's first postmark (Williams) Men 4050, a fancy buckled belt oval, rated as Very scarce. In 1887 the postmaster's yearly compensation was $246.62, not an extremely busy office. This town was named after the mill owner, L.E.White who would six years later build another mill down the coast at Elk.
