Interesting cover, littleriverphil. Here's a picture of the Principal of the San Jose State Normal School in 1887: I'm not sure if this could be referring to the same person as the addressee on your cover, as it's dated some 9 years later (1896), but how many Hattie Cuthertson's could have been at the San Jose State Normal School? |

Quote: how many Hattie Cuthertson's could have been at the San Jose State Normal School? Or how many Hattie Cuthertson's would have been know in Manchester, Cal, a tiny dairy farming community way up in inacessable Mendocino County. Remember that almost all incoming visitors arrived on The SteamShips Sea Foam or the Point Arena. Very few braved the overland route via horseback, a couple of days aboard ship, or a week or more on a horse or on the stage. One interesting fact about the stagecoach roads..Charles Earl Bowles (AKA Black Bart, the PO8 ) loved them! He held up the Wells Fargo stage a couple of time in the Mendocino mountains. The southern Mayacamas. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black_Bart_(outlaw) |

Phil that is a wonderful cover! It seems that all your material is absolutely astounding and I look forward to seeing them! Good show friend! My dream is to get a Hamilton 5˘ on cover but I doubt that will ever happen so I'll just be content looking at yours instead! OK enough blathering and here is a few of my junk for the day.. ;)

Thanks Jeff, your tobacco collection is comming along very nicely, Nice addition. I let another cover slip by, but my only excuse that it's a more modern cover, compared to my usual fare. But it does have a nice plate # pair and a great straight line Fort Bragg cancel, I can't determine the year, but think it is before my 1935 "cut off date". Sorry, business sized cover. |

Oops! I meant to post this yesterday. 13 March 1856 London The contents are so amusing I have often wondered if this is genuine or a modern hoax--- any thoughts? Here is what I make of the letter. Please correct my mistakes if you can recognize anything different. 114 St Russellsheir, To Augustus Langdon Esq (family unfriendly word), Blackguard & Liar Will you pay me this money owing or go into the accounts I have submitted. ___ not endeavor to slander me out of money earned & honestly worked for. If you are the son of your fathers cook that is no reason why you can rob me-- try & be honest for once-- or I shall not cease exposing you I think be ___ conduct deserving Jan Minotz? for Willis On the reverse of the cover in very neat tiny handwriting: Received the 31st March 1856 in an envelope with a policy, and a note from Mr. Willis. A little banking business from the Eel River Lumber Company in Fortuna, Cal. This is an un-reported postmark in the John H. Williams Book California Town Postmarks 1849-1935. Fortuna does have a similar postmark but not until 1916. For tomorrow I have another cover from Eureka, Cal. This is from the Humboldt County Bank to San Francisco bearing an in period Williams Hum 1710 postmark. |
