Beautifull card vinman, should include it in the Easter Card thread!
This morning is my last Mendocino county cover for March. It comes out of the ole fort, Fort Bragg ( did you know that the fort was named after a man who later became a Confederate general? Braxton Bragg. )in 1888.

Today I have a pse with a corner card from Rohnerville in Humboldt county Cal. Kinda roughly opened on the left, just missing the cc.

A postcard showing a view of Mendocino City from across the bay sent from Salsig, with a double strike of that scarce postmark!

April 1 1975 Mendocino issues own stamp declaring Independence from the state of California! I found out that this had been done about 1979, just after I had moved back into Mendocino county from Nevada. I never did find an off cover Mendocino Independence stamps. I used to see these covers every once in a while on ebay. All the covers I have seen where addressed to the same person.

This morning I have an second year Noyo Cal cover. The town of Noyo River/Noyo was located on the Noyo River flat about 1 mile from Noyo Bay. Two miles south of the miltary outpost of Fort Bragg. The little town grew along with the developemnt of Alexander W. Macpherson's Noyo Lumber mill. The Office was named Noyo River from Nov 17 1859 to Mar 3 1860, became Noyo May 20 1872 and closed on Jan 31 1918. It was located the Noyo River flat about 1 mile from Noyo Bay. What mail there was went through the Fort's post office (Fort Bragg open Jan 15 1861 to Jun 9 1862) while Noyo River was closed.

There wasn't much mail. Alan H. Patera's California Postmaster Compensation list odd numbered years, compensation for Noyo 1n 1873 was $12.00, in 1875 it had more than doubled to $25.14. Normally for an office of this size a manuscript is the first recorded postmark, but a distintive town/county postmark is the first recorded postmark the John H. Williams book California Town Postmarks 1849 -1935 with a date May 6 1875. My Noyo manuscript cover dated April 3 1874, is addressed to Henry Wetherbee who had been A. W. Macpherson's partner in the Noyo and Albion mills since 1864, maintaining the San Francisco office to look after the sales and shipping of both Albion and Noyo.

A post script to add to the above post. During the years between the openings of the Noyo post office, mill mail probably went abord the James M Townsend, a 168 ton three masted schooner built by Thomas H. Peterson at Little River in 1868 for Macpherson and Wetherbee, under Wells Fargo covers.

Although the message of this postcard begins March 31, it didn't get into the mailsteram until April 4 1911 in Salsig Cal. One of Mary's boys took a job down the coast in a logging camp near Salsig, he says that there are over 100 men in camp! This Boyd Eglin postcard correspendce was a treasure trove of postmarks and post card views, and Clyde ( the son ) didn't disapoint with this card, finding a different view of Mendocino, from the south, looking across the bay. Could have been nicer if the Albion reciever was on the back with the double postmark.

Two postcard postmarks and a cover with today's date. The postcards are from Frendale and Fort Bragg, and the cover is from Dyerville, and would be very nice without the crease on the left side. I really like mixed franking like this one, a pse with a bureau stamp!

No, unfortunatly, I have don't have any thing from the Ettersburg Post Office. It had a little trouble getting started, Opened first Feb 24 1903 closed Feb 28 1906 Opened second time Nov 2 1915 and closed finally Dec 3 1965. There are only two postmarks shown in the Willaims book California Town Postmarks 1849-1935, mainly because of thr cut off date of the books listings, There are No known postmarks listed for that three year first open period.

The first time I saw your username I wondered if you were in the Redwood Empire. Glad to meet you Randy, I grew up on the Mendocino coast.

About 25 years ago while I was still drywall contracting and living in Littleriver, CA, I took a job over near Ettersburg. The general contactor told me that it had rained over 20 inches the night before AT the job site! Had to carry everything in, long very muddy driveway!

Today I have only a single postcard and it's missing it's stamp as it looks like someone peeled it off, taking a bit of the postmark with it, but it was an RPO. The Eureka Scotia RPO! It is also an Easter greeting card, Easter was on April 7th in 1912.

Not intending to hijack this thread, but I happened to come across this ebay listing showing an Ettersburg, California precancel:

By the way, a biographical sketch of the Etter family for whom the town is named may be found here:

[quote][Great Humboldt cover sold today from DPO Shelter Cove to DPO Briceland and on to Ohio/quote]

Shelter Cove opened on Jul 12 1892 and closed on Mar 15 1933
Briceland opened on Jun 12 1889 and was changed to a Rural Station of Garberville Jan 5 1962. What year was the cover?

This morning I have two covers, both from Northern Mendocino county. The first cover is from Cahato, high up on Mt. Cahato in 1889.

The next cover comes from Usal, at one time, this town was known as the westernmost town in the U.S. It is also where Robert Dollar began his steamship business, when shipments of lumber from the Usal Redwood Company couldn't deliver on time, Robert Dollar bought the Newsboy

It's interesting to note that the addressee on the last cover, Charles A. Townsend, was a noted stamp dealer in Akron, Ohio in his day and was even President of the APS Chapter in that City.

He used a number of different pre-addressed covers, including the examples below -- one of which where he is noted to be "The Stamp Man"!
