Quote: May I ask wahat dioes PAW Office mean? I think that is supposed to be PAWN Office, as Randy mentioned the three gold balls being the symbol of pawn shops everywhere. Well after yesterday's lovely postmark bonanza, all I have for this date is a clearly struck Little River, Cal doane, Williams # Men 2140 and have to confess that I didn't scan the front. Couldn't tell why.. these scans are in a postmark file. |

The first of June, and all I can show is two postcards. both from Mendocino county, one is the town of Mendocino and the other is from Melburne, about 11 miles inland along the old main road leading inland, the stage route. Sorry, but the Melburne cancel doesn't have a date, part of a number is all that shows. corrected spelling |

The last postmark is Melburne (not Melbourne), California. I believe the date is included in the CDS although very smeared. I suggest the date is probably June ?, 1904, as the Melburne post office was only in operation from 1901-1918. |

Well, let's see what I can misspell today. Two postcards and a cover with today's postmark. One postcard from Humboldt county, and a card and a Wells Fargo cover that has been also stamped with the town's postmark. The postcards are from my postcard postmark file, and unless I found the front interesting, I didn't scan the fronts. My bad. But this thread is about postmarks! Enough rambling, on with the show! This next item is a bit odd. It is a Wells Fargo franked entire, but has apparently been sent though the mails, as the cover bears a violet Punta Arenas's ornate double ring saw tooth CDS, Williams # Men 3300, and no Wells Fargo hand stamp. This device was in use two years according the Williams book, EKU Feb 2 1882 and LKU Feb 7 1884, This cover was four months later. |

Looks like the P and then the 1 and 8 (kind of a 1 ) were struck first and the the rest of the cancel second. Like a double strike somehow. Bad Post Master, bad. |
