Today I have two postcards from Mendocino county, both with uniquely Mendocino county views and a beautifull Humboldt cover from Hydesville.
The first postcard shows us the log dump at Caspar. The train would pull up to the log chute and stop while men rolled the log off the railcar and down s steep slope to the log pond below. The coast road (now Hwy 1) crossed the log pond. When the train was unloading all traffic was stopped! I got to see this unloading on one of the last runs the train made in 1949. This card was mailed from Caspar in 1909.

The second card shows people being loaded onto the Sea Foam for a trip to San Francisco. They could also be taken out to the ship in a rowboat, but this was much faster, and safe. Only in Mendocino county do you see views like these two. This last card was mailed from Salsig, also in Mendocino county.

This 1880 Hydesville cover is addressed to one of the most influential men in Humboldt county. He was one of the first white men to explore the Eel River Valley and surrounding country in 1852. He was so impressed with the resources of the area that he took up a claim near Capetown. In 1866 he had Architect/Builder George Fairfield design and build Fern Cottage, a 30 room house for his wife Zipporah and their 13 children.

One each today. One postcard from Mendocino county (Ukiah) and one cover from Humboldt county (Rohnerville). I came across an interesting website the other day, a Gazetteer for the United States and Canada, which gives the 1890 populations of communities. In it I found the populations of 17 Humboldt county towns and 24 Mendocino county towns. The 17 Humboldt county towns total 10,606 people and the 24 Mendocino county towns total 8788 people. As well as Rohnerville was growing, it's no surprise that this cover is addressed to the county Superintendent of Schools, there were 621 people in Rohnerville fiver years earlier.

Two Mendocino postcards, and two covers with today's date. The first postcard is from Kenny, overpaid, way up in the northwest corner of the county, now in the Sinkyone Wilderness State Park,in that area called the Lost Coast, in between two other DPOs, Moody and Usal. The other postcard was sent from Point Arena by a guest at the hot springs. I found this card on Jim Forte's site, about 10 days ago. Jim only showed the message side, but the mention of the hot spring was enough to peak my interest, the view side was a bonus.

Of the two covers, there is one from each county, a nice Columbian entire from Mendocino City and a brand new fancy cancel from Scotia on a Pacific Lumber corner card.. I say brand new because this strike is two days before the EKU listed in the Williams book. Another member here, redwoodrandy has the LKU of the same postmarking device.

With today's date I have a postcard from Hopland in Mendocino county, and another Scotia cover for Humboldt county. This cover not only has the Pacific Lumber corner card, it's addressed to another lumber company. The Williams book includes tracings of the killer when duplexed with the CDS. For this postmark Hum-4490 John traced the then EKU, the Apr 19, 1895 postmark, with a solid star duplexed killer. The killer on the first Scotia cover I showed, Jul 17, 1895 wasn't very well struck, but still shows a open center, today's cover is defiantly a star in a star!

A day late with a couple of postcards. The first card mailed from Point Arena to Albion. Young Harold is getting better at writing postcards! And he picked a lot of berries! The other card was mailed from Hardy, up in the northern end of the county.

Interesting. From an earlier time? Looks like it was trimmed down to fit as a stiffener.

Going back for a moment to Stamppaige's 50-star US Flag FDC (commemorating Hawaii joining the Union) it is worth noting that it is Scott No. 1153 and the cacheted cover is said to be the 1st Bruce cachet, which may make it a bit more collectible than other more common cachets for that issue.

I wonder why the Union Jack is also pictured on Stamppaoge's first day Scott #1153 cover?

Two from Humboldt county today, A logging activity postcard with an appropriate Eureka slogan cancel and a cover from Orleans. The slogan cancel reads " Save The Redwoods" and a close look shows us that the loggers are skidding fir logs. Of course this card came to me from the very obliging Boyd Eglin family. The Orleans cover contains an invitation to a wedding and was a similar ebay deal, bought a couple from the seller and asked if they had any more, which they then sold as a lot, Which is how I got the Boyd/Eglin group. They saved fees and I saved in postage. WIn/win
