A postcard postmark for Point Arena and a cover from Caspar for today. The Caspar postmark is Caspar's fancy oval town and county postmark. The earlist recorded use of this device was Jul 28, 1882. This usage is 11 days later, on a double weight letter to Frank Cooper at the U.S. mint in San Francisco. It is also one of five cover I have from H.B. Phillips, the Caspar mill superintendant to his friend Frank Cooper.Four of which bear the Caspar town and county postmark. |

My postmark for today is from the town that my maternal grandmother's Uncle Nels Iverson founded, Iversen, Cal. It was a shipping point for railroad ties and tanbark, and never got very big. The highest compensation paid to the postmaster in the 20 years this office was open was $69.00 in 1909. But today I present a registered letted, sent on today date 1907, postage and registration fee paid by a pair of Scott U.S. 304. The cover had a couple of interesting auxiliary markings, A purple straight line "Delay in Delivery, if any, caused by insufficient address" on the front and a purple Santa Cruz Reg.Div. two ring time dial on the back. I'm not sure that those are called as this is the only one I've seen. To show how small Iversen was, I've included this photo (taken in 1907) of a busy day at Iversen, and a photo of the loading chute. The large spoked wheel raised and lowered the chute, that is cords of tanbark stacked along side. Note how close the ship is to the rocks! |

Manchester, Cal 1884. The population of Manchester in 1880 was 84, eight of them members of my family. No luck here, this handwriting doesn't match any of the samples I have. :D But no matter, I like the cover. |
