Cover Calendar For Month And Day -Pics

Today's showing will be a postcard from Albion and censored cover from Point Arena.
Nothing special about this card, just a brother keeping in touch with his sister.. more from the Elgin/Boyd find.

Today I have two late new years cards and a pretty little First Bureau issues cover from Mendocino city to New South Wales. Took 24 days to arrive.
Waddington in Humboldt county.






Westport in Mendocino County.






Too bad the ink was so fresh when this cover was postmarked, the cover tossed on top of it left an offset through part of the address. Still, it's a favorite.

I have a 5 x 7" photo of this Steam Ship POMO tied up at the Point Arena Wharf taken around 1897. In the photo you can see she is being loaded via the slide chute.

Blocksburg to Cloverdale, addressed to Mrs E Preston, a 19century faith healer.

Formally Mad River, Blue Lake in Humboldt county was renamed on Apr 8 1878 after a 13 acre lakes was formed by flooding of the North fork of the Mad River. The river changed course in the 1920s and the lake is now a small pond of private property. The Post office is still open.

Two postcards and a cover today. The first card is from Caspar to Lowell, Mass. Kind of odd sending a southern California view from Northern California

In 1966, I worked for the man who owned Bear Harbor, and one day was told to move a very large pile of boxes of letters from the home/office building of the Bear Harbor and Eel River railroad. They were eventually burned. Sure wish I had a couple of those boxes now!

The Humboldt section of the "Lost Coast still has three communities, Pertrolia, Shelter Cove and Whitethorn. In Mendocino county, the towns of Andersonia, Hardy, Kenny ,Monroe, Moody, Rockport, and Usal are gone. Hardy has a couple of homes left and there is a street with 5-6 homes and a school in Rockport.

The second card is from Moody, and I think is addressed to Sarah Drewery, who seemed popular, or at least saved the cards. She was the addressee on two other postcards that show postmarks of four different town when she lived in Monroe. I believe these were all transfer points. There were no direct routes to Monroe. I'll show todays card and then the other two.








Hearst to Willits, Hardy (just the lower half of the CDS shows, but to get to Monroe, you had to go thru Hardy, road forked there.)and Monroe.




Jan 20, 1908 Ukiah, Willits, Hardy and Monroe, took I day to get to Hardy and another 3 days to go the last 10 miles. Stage schedules?





The cover is from Mendocino city, 1882

A postcard from Loleta, Humboldt county. The front shows a Southern Pacific McKeen Motor railcar and Mail car trailer at the Sacramento yards. The card is the last of a set of three showing MC #9. I've included the interior layout of the mail car.

Westport Cal really had no port, but shipped tan oak and lumber from piers built among the rocks near shore.









Today covers was sent from Westport this date 1889.
The blue 591 was possibly J R Mathews' post office box number.

Only a single post card from Ukiah to Monroe. Now called Hale's Grove. I showed this card a few days ago. An interesting card as it shows what I assume to be routing marks. The road to Monroe went thru these towns and turned a new direction at each town. Mailed from Ukiah Jan 20, arrived Willits (20 miles north) later that day, arrived Hardy Jan 21 and waited for a stage for four days to cover the last 12 miles. The Willits receiver shown is not listed in the Williams book, Very few are, Point Arena being the exception, Williams lists a receiver (Men 3030 as a postmark on Apr 13, 1910), and I have a different Point Arena receiver used even earlier to cancel out going mail.

Oops, yesterday.

Bulwinkle Jan 20, 1910. Named for property owner Conrad Bulwinkle, it was basically a company town for the Little River Redwood Co's crew. Mill operations began in 1908 and Post office was opened May 7 1909 and on Sep 9 1922 the name was changed to Crannell (Little River Redwood Company's president, Levi Crannell and that office was closed Nov 30 1969.

Yesterday's date 1868 Mendocino. Postmarked with Williams 2320, Mendocino's 2nd town mark. On Feb 17th, I'll show a cover that makes me think differently.

A double rate letter ( or hat order) from Punta Arenas, the first true Mendocino county post office. This office opened on Jun 2 1858, and changed the name to Point Arena on Jan 9 1889 and has been open ever since.

A misspent cover from Laytonville. The addressee had moved, but the back of the cover shows 4 town marks catching up to him.
More mail order business from Point Arena, just 31 years and a Post office name change later.

A postcard from Point Arena, daughter Nora telling Mom they made to trip south safely. Of particular interest is Nora's comment.."we didn't have to swim ALder Creek"..

Alder Creek is 7 miles north of Point Arena and 3 miles north of Manchester. It also happens to be right on top of the San Andreas fault line. The April 18th 1906 earthquake destroyed the Alder Creek bridge when the south and north side of the fault MOVED 14 feet laterally. The evidence can still be seen today, though you have to walk out the old coast road.
