Good morning, only 3 2 today. Actually 3, but I've posted one of them previously. If I show that one, I need to locate it in my Previously Posted pics, a laborious hunt. Plus, you've already seen it. Huumm, there was a Youtube link with the Cape Mendocino cover post. Lost or removed? Quote: Great stuff. A pleasure. Hello from Ettersburg Hi Randy, I'll be back, have cards and covers from Upper Mattole, Petrolia, Ettersburg, Thorn (Whitethorn), and even Frank! A little town between Shelter Cove and Thorn, from 1892 to 1902, 4 of 'em! Quote: The lighthouse was still very young when that 1869'ish cover was sent. Interesting how the lighthouse was dismantled and rebuilt relatively recently 60 miles away, perhaps in a more accessible tourist-friendly location? I'll be bold and call it a 1869 cover. The blue ornate Harrisburgh postmark ( can't read the state) doesn't look like a small town, more city, and not likely to still have Sc 114's in Sep of 1870. The replica was built in Ferndale, about 6-7 miles up (north), while the original lens dome was Heloed 10ish miles down (South) the coast to Shelter Cove. On to today, Willits & San Fran. RPO, and Fort Bragg. |

Three for today. This Mendocino County post office was first opened as Sanel on Sep 251860, closed on Jan 29 1869. Re-opened Aug 10 1869, changed name to Hopland and closed Dec 13 1875. Re-opened as Sanel Jul 13 1889, Closed Sep 2 1891, name changed to Hopland and is still open. This cover is from the 2nd open period, before the 1st name change. Contains a 3-page letter. A postcard from Orrs, (Hot Springs) with a view of the Springs. (sort of) This RPO cover apparently got quite the ride or rides after being missent to Warren, Pa.. It is endorsed Air Mail. I don't think Eureka, Cal. provided Air Mail service in 1937. So a 284 mile train ride, a few miles aboard Northwestern Pacific's ferry Eureka across San Francisco bay, then a plane ride to (and from?) Warren, Pa. and back to San Francisco and finally across the bay to Walnut Creek, Cal.. Sounds somewhat like the mail routes used now. |

Three more for yesterday. Don't know how I missed them, and they were in a row. I use Microsoft's OneNote to keep my list by decade, Town, date, year. The rest of yesterday; Inglenook. Fort Bragg, and Will ets & San Fran. NWP-985-T1, the misspelled one. Quick background on the Willets & San Fran. RPO; Operated (per Mobile Post Office Society Catalog) from May 1 1903 until June 17 1915. Then became the Eureka & San Fran. RPO. My earliest 985-T1 is Feb 11 1909 and latest is Oct 16 1913. I have 31 Willits & San Fran. RPOs from 1909 to Sep 1914, 15 of them are 985-T1s with another available in Meher's Sale 138 on Nov 11. I have a total of 65 NWP 985-U1s, U2s, U3s, 985-T1s, with 10 985-U1.1s, (A variety) See here; https://goscf.com/t/88838&whichpage=26#839425 and 10 985-U2.1, see below, Under Oct 11. By far the scarcest Willits and San Fran. RPO postmark is one of the cataloged numbers. With 985-T1, the error the commonest of my 65 NWP 985 Us and T Today, Oct 11, only three. Fort Bragg, A Willits & San Fran. RPO, a variety, what I refer to as 985-U2.1 and Mendocino. Edit: spelling. and spacing |

Five postmarks for Oct 12. Gualala was the 12th post office opened in Mendocino County. This cover was mailed 13 months after the office opened, the new unpublished EKU of Men-1420. 6 years, 2 months and 6 days earlier than the date recorded in California Town Postmarks 1849-1935. Eureka, this postmark temporarily called Hum-1655 is a 1c(ircle) 25.5 mm (dia) 10L (between 1st letter of Town and 1st letter of State in mm.) with a 4mm day was not recorded in California Town Postmarks 1849-1935. The book does catalog 4 very similar postmarks in the same time span, two (Hum-1640 & Hum-1650) are the same diameter (25.5) but differ in Town to State distance. The other two are Hum-1660 (1c 26.5 12L) and Hum-1670 (1c 26.5 10L. These both have 4 mm days. Arcata, Loleta, and Alderpoint. Edited to add Eureka postmark details. |

Four today. Albion, Seems an odd early use of Albion's small (21 14 11L) double ring fancy cancel on a Well Fargo cover., instead of a Wells Fargo cancel, may have wanted to keep it in the mails? Little River Weltmer. and Alderpoint. Edit added question of town cancel use over Wells Fargo's on Albion cover. |

Only one postmark for today, another un-published Eureka, Cal. postmark. Actually, the same postmark, different day. I do have several of these and all of them are found with either Continental or American 3 cent banknotes or on a PSE of same era. Oh, and one on a Liberty card. Eureka, |

Four today, two previously uploaded, but it was quite a while back, so I'm re-posting them. Using old up-loads. Cahto, registered Cleone, could not find this in "My Previously uploaded" Cleone opened Mar 26 1883 ( was Kanuck; no postmarks recorded) and closed Jul 15 1908. This was Cleone's first postmark, a Town and County fancy, although it is a bit faint. Alton, and Ukiah. |

Quote: (Made me look twice. ) Should have looked the 3rd time, missed one, Eureka. Three for today. Rohnerville, a faint strike of Rohnerville's 1st Town and County postmarks, Bulwinkle, nope, not kidding. Have 5 more, but none mention Rocky. and Ukiah's rather large double ring (33.5, 34mm) circle of 1917-1919. |

Just two today, An in-coming Wells Fargo cover to Mendocino, and a postcard from Gualala. In case anyone wondered how that name is pronounced, it sounds like Wal-lala. |

Another two for the 24th, the first is a Registered cover from Cuffey's Cove, currently a house and a wide spot on California's Hwy 1, one mile north of Elk. Easy to recognize, there'll be a bunch of cars jammed into the wide spot! Easily one of the most photographed scenes on the Mendocino Coast. This postcard was mailed from Los Angeles on the 19th where it received a Panama Pacific Exposition cancel on its way to Waddington, way up in Humboldt County, where the local postmaster used their current post marker as a receiver five days later. |
