Today is Opera Day!

"Gilbert and Sullivan" refers to the Victorian-era theatrical partnership of the librettist W. S. Gilbert (1836-1911) and the composer Arthur Sullivan (1842-1900), and to the fourteen comic operas they jointly created between 1871 and 1896. Here are images of the five stamps in a set depicting scenes from some of Gilbert and Sullivan's most successful operas, designed by British artist Lynda Gray (1947- ), printed by photogravure, and issued by Great Britain on July 21, 1992 to commemorate the 150th anniversary of Arthur Sullivan's birth, Scott Nos. 1458-62, SG Nos. 1624-28.

The Gondoliers, or, The King of Barataria (1889)

The Mikado, or, The Town of Titipu (1885)

Iolanthe, or, The Peer and the Peri (1882)
