This was my grandfather's collection. He has many 1930 autographed air race covers over 200, Vatican, french and US albums (1920 - 1970). My question is he has a Jefferson two cent postal card that has a 1 cent stamped on top of the red Jefferson stamp. He has it marked as a ux31. It is in mint condition and is unused. Have any idea if this is rare and value?

Can you post a scan of it? Particularly the stamp in a good resolution. If it is a genuine UX31 then yes it is fairly rare and rather valuable (about $4500), but UX32 is also a more common 1¢ on 2¢ overprint Die I (the more expensive UX31 is Die II.) Edited because the Scott Specialized is poorly laid out - as Russ has pointed out the overprint will be the easier way to recognize which it is. Balf |

There are 6 Scott numbers for 1 cent on 2 cent revalued. The UX31 (Die II) is a single line applied by canceling machine. UX32 (Die I) and UX33 (Die II) is a double line applied by canceling machine. UX34 (Die I) and UX35 (Die II) is a double line applied by printing press. UX36 is on the 1911 2 cent Grant. |

Hi C6joe, welcome.
When you reply to a forum use the link at the top Reply to Topic (I think it said that). That window that opens up from that click has icons along the top and below a green camera icon (Add Image) (90kb limit, no spaces in file name). If you need to use Photobucket or Picasa or some such photo hosting site to link to for larger sized images.

I have added a better scan in the site above. It will allow you to expand the images. Thanks for your help. |

Both the top and bottom cards are UX32 red on buff Die I. If they are not preprinted on the back they are cat value about $60. each. The differences in the appearance of the surcharge is normal as these were done with 38 different machines/cancel dies. |

Thanks again, you are a wealth of knowledge. Do you have any knowledge in 1920's and 1930's regarding autograph race covers? As I posted I have around 200. A couple signed by Amelia Earhart, Admiral Bird, Orville Wright. Are these and others very collectible? I will post some to the above picasa site. |
