book was published over twenty years later in 1922.

In May of 1898, at the Battle of Manila Bay, George Dewey destroyed Spain's entire fleet
of older warships, without sustaining a single death in battle. Dewey became a national
hero and was immediately promoted to rear admiral.



Continuing to operate in the Philippines, Dewey coordinated with Filipino insurgents
in attacking the remaining Spanish forces in the region. In July, American army troops
arrived and the city of Manila was captured on August 13. For his service, Dewey was
promoted to admiral effective March 8, 1899.



This patriotic postcard was send in 1901 from Hoboken, New Jersey to England franked
with a 2c Pan-American locomotive stamp. The docketing indicates via Cherbourg, S. S.
Kaiser Wilhelm der Grosse.

A 1c PanAm stamp on an "Official Souvenir Mailing Card" postmarked on August 21,
1901 in Buffalo. It shows the Ethnology Building at the Exposition.

This 1902 registered cover traveled from Broadway St. in New York to Basel,
Switzerland on the steamship Incania. It has the 4c, 5c, and 8c Pan American
stamps plus an additional 2c small banknote for a total of 19c. Assuming an 8c
registry fee, a double weight letter to Europe (2 x 5c) would be overpaid by 1c.



The letter left New York on the 12th of April and arrived in Basel eight days later on
the 20th.
