Weather balloon, designed by Canadian advertising artist Alan L. Pollock, engraved and printed by Thomas De La Rue & Co., Ltd., and issued by the United Nations on January 28, 1957 to honor the World Meteorological Organization, Scott No. 49.

Here is an image of a stamp depicting the sun, a cloud, rain and snow, designed by Swiss graphic artist Donald Brun (1909-1999), engraved by Albert-Edgar Yersin (1905-1984), and issued by Switzerland on October 22, 1956 for the World Meteorological Organization, Scott No. 8O6.

NZPost produced a set of 6 in 2008 title 'Weather Extremes'



As a narrow island nestled between the Tasman Sea and the South Pacific Ocean, New Zealand is prey to climactic extremes.

Buffeted by the boisterous predominant westerlies known by sailors as the Roaring Forties, rocked by the remains of tropical cyclones and sluiced by floods, New Zealand weather is a force to be reckoned with.

As the effects of global warming kick in and the country experiences even more extreme weather events, our interest in the weather looks set to increase.

New Zealanders often say they experience four seasons in one day and the latest range of stamps from New Zealand Post acknowledges these wild weather patterns.

As the United Nations also declared 2008 the International Year of Planet Earth, New Zealand Post hopes the stamp range will increase awareness of the importance of Earth Sciences to our society.

The 50c stamp shows the devastating impact of the 1997/98 El Nino drought. This is particularly relevant as parts of New Zealand are currently experiencing severe drought.

While Wellington is known as the 'windy city' the image of a man struggling with his upturned umbrella in the 50c stamp was actually taken in Auckland.

Other stamps include;

$1.00 stamp which shows the effects of storms and water crashing against the marina of Wellington's Evans Bay
$1.50 stamp with a picture of the floods which resulted from Cyclone Bola in 1988
$2.00 stamp with images of the snow storms in Southland in 2001
And the $2.50 stamp which shows the shimmer of heat waves on the beach in the middle of a scorching summer's day.
New Zealand Post stamps general manager Ivor Masters says the images on the stamps are striking.

"Weather is fascinating to most people, these images reflect that fascination."

Here are images of the two stamps in a set publicizing World Meterological Day, printed by photogravure, and issued by Nigeria on March 23, 1967, Scott Nos. 209 & 210. Both stamps' designs include the emblem of the World Meteorological Organization.

In Aztec mythology, Tlaloc, "He Who Makes Things Sprout," was the god of rain, lightning and thunder. Here is an image of an airmail stamp depicting an illustration of Tlaloc from the 16th century Codex Magliabecchi, designed by H. Rodriguez, printed by photogravure, and issued by Mexico on November 4, 1977 to commemorate the centenary of the National Central Meterological Observatory, Scott No. C540.

Here are images of the three engraved stamps in a weather set with designs including the emblem of the World Meteorological Organization, issued by Republic of China (Taiwan) in 1962 to publicize World Meteorological Day, Scott Nos. 1337-39. The NT$0.80 and 2.00 values were issued on March 23, and the NT$1.00 value was issued on May 7, 1962.

Austria issued these two stamps on the Sonnblick Meteorological Observatory, that studies the climate of Austria. First stamp, Scott 666, issued September 1, 1961.



Second stamp, Scott 1359, issued August 27, 1986.
