Here is an image of an airmail stamp depicting a bull gaur (Bos gaurus), the tallest species of wild cattle and the largest extant bovine, designed by Laotian artist Ky Phung Chaleun, engraved by Jean Miermont, and issued by Laos on September 7, 1970, Scott No. C71, plus a photo. Note the error in the genus name ("Bisos"} inscribed on the stamp. The gaur is also called the Indian bison.

Dear Member Nethryk, As a new member I have taken some time to look and enjoy topical threads and when I saw your beautiful Gauer, I was reminded of the Kampuchean (1986) World Wide Fund for Nature stamp among my "Cows". Wouldn't it be awful if this magnificent species were to disappear for lack of wilderness! (I very much admire your posts because you have so much information in them.)

Dear Nethryk, Thanks for your welcome! It's really fun to have contact to others and learn all sorts of details. The topic cattle can be followed way back to the stone age, and artwork from that time is beautiful on stamps. I'm sure you know of Lascaux in France (1968, design C. Durrens). K

Hi Nethryk, Thanks for telling me about the Caves thread; I hadn't got that far yet; there is still so much to be seen here! The cute calves from Switzerland are part of a quartet of farmyard youngsters, drawn by Judith Brennwald and issued in August 2013. Too bad it is a very "general" portrait and does not show one of the many very special breeds found in Switzerland.
