TinMan, Some of the most 'famous' modern gripper cracks occur on the US Transportation Series that was issued between 1981 and 1995. The first 17 or so issues of this series were printed on the Cottrell presses and virtually all 17 have gripper cracks. They are unusually easy to see, because the stamps have very large white ( read: unprinted ) areas.
The most well known are indeed very visible to the naked eye. Examples are Scott # 1908, plate 15 with the "Wounded P" gripper crack or Scott # 2124, plate 4 with the "Buggy Whip" variety. There are numerous others in this series.
The Plate Number Coil Collectors Club ( PNC3 ) is in the process of cataloguing all of these ( and other PNC varieties ) and listing them on their website, including pictures. This endeavor should be in place later this fall ( 2014 ).

Peter
