Great souvenir sheet Rod, where is the story behind the acquisition. I love to see your stuff posted as I can almost always guarantee it will be outside the mainstream and quite unusual. Thanks for posting - Jeff |

Gee, I am surprised at the reaction. Whilst I would not part with it (sorry James) it doesn't grab me the way British or European centred cinderellas do.
Possibly because I don't have a long association with US material, Linn's etc. I think I have another Linn's SS in stock, I'll have to go for a rumble.
Can someone explain : "Founder of the Philatelic Agency" ? what exactly is that? Cheers.

Jeff, this was amongst a $200 purchase from "revenuecollector" on SCF a lovely assortment of stuff that will take me the next 12 months to catalogue. Possibly the best interest material I have bought in 10 years. Many thanks to Revenuecollector.

Rod, unless I am mistaken it was the precursor to the United States Postal Stamp Fulfillment Agency that handles collectors requests for FDC, rolls and the like. |

There must be more to the story on the suicide of Michael L. Eidsness, Jr., that I can't access for free from internet sources, but here's an abstract from The Washington Post: Quote: Eidsness, Noted Philatelist, Dies In River Plunge Leaves Suicide Notes: Harbor Police Recover Body. The Washington Post (1923-1954) - Washington, D.C. Date: Aug 4, 1937
After dragging the Potomac River for more than eight hours, the harbor police yesterday recovered the body of Michael L. Eidsness, jr., 44, former superintendent of the Postoffice Department Division of Stamps, who apparently leaped to his death from the Memorial Bridge. |

Quote: The WPS held a memorial meeting in memory of Michael Eidsness, Jr., who had committed suicide. Eidsness a member had been head of the Post Office Department's Philatelic Agency, and through that role had been a popular figure in U.S. philately. Eidsness was forced to resign his government post in 1932 over an incident that was embarrassing to the Roosevelt administration. Some members of the WPS did not agree with the Society holding the memorial, partly because of growing resentment against the actions of Fawcett, its president. Cheers |

Quote: Eidsness was forced to resign his government post in 1932 over an incident that was embarrassing to the Roosevelt administration. I saw the above quote out there, too, but never quite figured out what his "government post" was in 1932 and what the "incident" was that was embarrassing to the Roosevelt administration. If it happened today, the media would be all over the story. Anyone know what may have occurred? |

Thanks for the information and links. I have done some additional research myself and as I understand it, Michael L. Eidsness, Jr.'s resignation was that he resigned as the Superintendent of the Division of Stamps and Chief of the Philatelic Agency of the Post Office Department. Still not exactly sure what the previous reference meant to him being "forced to resign over an incident that was an embarrassment to the Roosevelt administration." Later news articles seems to have put a different spin on that comment as evidenced below, suggesting that changes prompted by the Roosevelt administration made him ask to be released. I seems to recall that FDR was so involved in stamps, that he wanted to approve anything and everything related to stamps and no longer left it to the PO officials to deal with. It is purely speculation on my part, but if I were to gusss, I'd suggest that change had something to do with the resignation. Brooklyn (NY) Daily Eagle (10/22/1933): A follow up article suggested he was "retiring" from the office and would be "writing a book based on my observations and experiences". Schenectady (NY) Gazette (11/06/1933): And finally to fast forward to his untimely death in 1937, this article suggests he was despondent over ill health: New York Post (08/03/1937): |
