Nice story about the Placa Reial. How big is the collectors gathering and when does it take place ?? The atmosphere at these outdoor Collectors events is wonderful. I remember visiting the Paris market a few years ago and it looked just elegant along the Champs Elysee. There are still a few of these outdoor gatherings in Europe but I did not know about the one in Barcelona. Another good reason to visit perhaps ? Just noticed that the thread is up to 20 pages. Amazing for a specialist Cinderella topic.....well done. Londonbus1 |

Thank you very much Mike. Remember that you're one of the fathers of this thread; so, you deserve much of the congratulations. As for the Plaça Reial gathering, it takes place every Sunday and bank holiday morning from early day (some people are there at 8 am!) to around 2 or 3 pm (here, people have lunch quite late). Although it has gone down due to the internet competition and to the diminishing popularity of our hobby, the market is still quite busy with many tourists nowadays strolling into it, as the Plaça Reial is very close to the Rambles and to the main old town places. Anyway its peak time was in the sixties or seventies (when I started to go there with my philatelist uncle). But I still go there nearly every Sunday, have a coffee or a beer (the square is also famous for its inns!), chat on philately and perhaps found a hidden gem... |

Well, living in the (hopefully) capital of the next European state , has many drawbacks (busy, expensive...) and some advantages (lively, charming, interesting, nice weather...) Anyway, if I find something that will fit into your collections, it will find its way to Israel. To continue, I show a cinderella of Barcelona cathedral. The inside is Gothic from the XIV and XV centuries, but the façade is from early XX century. So, when the picture was taken, around 1931, the work was pretty new. By the way, the house on the right was hit by the bombs of Nazi Condor Legion planes (fighting alongside Franco) in 1938, and the whole area had to be demolished around 1950. Now, the square in front of the cathedral is wider... |

As a child and young man I lived next to this cathedral. I knew that the bombs were "helped" to clear the area but I did not know was that the Condor Legion which was caused dismembered. Cursus, your explanations are very interesting. Because tomorrow we have a general strike, I think it is a good time to put an stamp on the strike of 1914. There was a post where you talked about but I think I now enter a new observation. This is a plate specimens that were published with significant differences in general. The copy of the image is signed by Ismael Smith and it's one of the two signed in the plate. If someone knows something about this... |

Two sad and two nice pictures shown by Malamute. On the first one, there's a Catalan text saying "Bombs falling on Barcelona". On the Plaça Reial pictures, just to point that the street lamps were designed by Antoni Gaudí.
As for the question of Melic about the 1914 strike cinderella; to say that, aside Smith, Xavier Nogués, Humbert, Apa, Labarta, Joan Colom, Ramon Roqueta, Aragay, Pere Casas, Enric Guitart, Junceda and Andreu, as well as Víctor Oliva (the printer) are known to be 1914 cinderella authors. Cinderellas were sold on November 29th 1914 at a festival held at the Fine Ars Palace, built for the 1888 Exhibition and disappeared around 1945. Information from the book "Barcelona, Art I Aventura del Llibre", Barcelona 2002 (out of print). |

Just to have some fun. The 9th Internacional Magic Congress, held in Barcelona on September 1964. The cinderella is written in Spanish, as it was compulsory by then. |

Well, Mike, feel free to come as you like! Catalonia is a welcoming country. In the plaça Reial market, anyone can buy, but to sell on a proper table, you must pay a yearly fee to Barcelona city council. Though, no one will object if you sell by your own or on a bar table... |

Barcelona harbour in 1932, I'm glad to say that it has changed very much since then...The only thing I regret it has disapeared is the Modernist Barcelona Nautic Club building, the one with the dome right in the middle of the picture. |
