I'm so interested in Estonian stamps, that just yesterday came back from a very nice two weeks trip arround Estonia. From Narva to Kuressaare and fron Valga to Haapsalu, not forgetting Tartu, Pärnu, and so on...
There, in Tartu's open market, I bought this nice 1994 cover with postmarks of the the Estonian Song Festival 125 aniv., held for the first time in Tartu.

For twenty years now, I've been collecting Estonian used stamps (1st Republic) and Estonian Postal History, with main focus on the 1990/1992 period, from which I do have a prety nice collection.

Barcelona 1992 Olympic Games series. Circulated to that city on the Games of the 25th Olympiad opening day.

How many of you knew that Estonian Post destroyed 3.2 tons (21 million) of stamps last year? What a waste of good stuff!

Those stamps were no longer in service so they just shredded them.

For example:

Cursus's 1992 Olympic Games series cover that was posted. All of those were shredded...and many others.

See, that's the problem with modern society,

no thinking outside the box, no verve, no free thinkers
just too many rules.

Here you have to hand it to the Germans

Give the kids "The World's fastest stamp tearer"
get the kids involved in stamping... what fun!

Imagine 21 million stamps to rip apart....Yowee!

What do they think of next? Wonder if that's a + on their resume when they get older?

I wouldn't mind ripping apart stamps if I got to keep them afterwards. But in that case I'm pretty sure I would be in last place.

Wonder how many were damaged?

In Norway the Postal Authority just sit on the stamps for some years, and then try to sell them for over face value.

Now that Estonia is in Euros, ether it was the end of this year or next (don't remember) Then all of the kroon stamps will no longer be in service...meaning more stamps for them to shred soon.
