Hi Rod, some more very nice Romanian revenues.

The agricultural revenues would have been used on taxes on sales of livestock, veterinary certificates of health, and records of ownership.

I believe the cancellation is SOMES with a cedilla on the final S.

In the 1930s there was a County of Somes (around the city of Dej) and I'm guessing they may have been cancelled in a local authority office somewhere there.

"Somes" would likely be a local overprint (one of several types of local overprints, some handstamped, some printed). I don't think it is a cancel.

I guess this could be a local type of overprint but it's very different in style from those shown in Barefoot for three other districts.

Rod, do these stamps still have gum?

If they were overprinted and used I would expect to see some kind of cancellation by pen or handstamp.

I don't want to overstate my case in guessing that it is an overprint.

When I was chasing down a description of one of the typographed overprints, I came across a list of seven or eight different local overprints. (Yes, I copied the list; no, I haven't yet found what I saved it as.)

Using that list and Google, I came up with a reference to handstamped or typographed overprints, but I didn't find an image of a handstamped overprint.

So I'm only guessing. When I find the list of locals, I'll paste it here for the Googlemonster.

"Some#537;" indeed, and it is as said: handstamped (local) overprint (they still have gum). Unfortunately I never saw any on document, but I agree with what nigelc said (probably on sales, health certificates, records etc.)I don`t have catalogues for these, as they`re not postal. A translation of the inscriptions I can provide:
Sow selected seeds! (2 Lei)
Sow crop! (5 Lei)
Propagate sheep! (1 Leu)
Anyway it must have been a large field collecting these kind. Hope you won`t mind using this thread to show two examples (as it seems to me that bw. worldwars and for a short period even after that in Romania almost on every written paper was applied a stamp, stating that it is for aviation or culture or agriculture and so on)
Here`s an autobus-ticket from the 30`s:

Here`s a book (a Selma Lagerlof novel)

Thanks Waldmalatz and Cjd,

Barefoot lists overprints on one or more values from Rodney's set for Alba, Ciuc, Fagaras (two types), Ilfov, Odorhei, Satu-Mare, Sighishoara and Somes. However, only examples for Ilfov, Oderhei and Satu-Mare are shown.

I found my list, which has one additional entry to the list from Barefoot, Judetul Ilfov, or Jud. Ilfov.

For what its worth, the Sighishoara overprint is "Sgs." (That could cause some headscratching.)

Fantastic information on such a bizarre label.

I must add these and other labels were from Mr. Wadmalatz
and I thank him, I love my Romanian collection,
(now over 2,700 stamps)

Yes, they still evidence full gum Nigel.

This will make a nice album page, thanks one and all.

Still looking to ID this

Each of these districts or counties is called a "judet" (with a comma or cedilla under the t) in Romanian.

The overprints as described in Barefoot are:

ALBA
CIUC
Fagaras
FAGARAS
ILFOV
Jud. Ilfov-1932 [from ILFOV, picture in Barefoot]
O d h. [from Odorhei, picture in Barefoot]
SATU-MARE [characters spaced out, picture in Barefoot]
SOMES
Sgs. [and value as a numeral] [from Sighisoara, picture in Barefoot]

The board software for some reason has forced my single "U" to "you" in SATU-MARE above. I don't know why and I've tried editing it to no avail. The overprint is just SATU-MARE but the characters are spaced out.

I'll edit the previous post.
