Thank you Perf, that was my intuitive thought also, but most of my expertise comes from this thread.

I've just started dipping my toe into the very complicated world of Hermes heads. I've made an attempt to roughly categories the issues I received in a lot and was hoping someone could help me refine further to identify exact printings and catalogue numbers. The first set I'd like to work through have control numbers and I've used numbers 1 to 11 on the images so that the obverse can be linked to the main image. Thanks in advance!

And finally the very coarse 10 and 11:

@morrowsteven, your avatar shows your location as the UK.

Keep in mind that people from different countries use different catalogues. Unless all catalogues are at your disposal, you might want to specify which catalogue numbers you are looking for.

Keep in mind this website is highly biased towards Scott numbers, with Michel numbers being a distant second.

10 and 11 look like cream paper but hard to say by scan.
With figures on back makes them Scott 47 and 45 respectively

10 intrigues me as missing "0" on back and "2" deformed?

@NSK yes, absolutely. I would be happy with any to be honest: Scott, Michel, SG or even Hellas.

@rgstamp - yes, that control number is intriguing.

I suspect your stamps 4 and 5 are both Scott 22 (80 l carmine on pale rose)
Stamp 5 maybe 22a
They don't appear as from cleaned plate and figures on back are carmine color

Color identification difficult with scans
———
80l can only be Scott 15,22, or 29

From what I see they look like 22

Your 1,2,3,4,5 are from later printings.

To identify Large and Small Hermes Heads you need both the stamps and specialized catalogs in front of you . Scans just don't work . Condition is everything with H.H.

Here is what Hellas catalog says about the subject . I used both the HELLAS catalog plus this additional catalogue.

Thank you @floortrader and @perf12. Looks like I need to find myself a copy of the Hellas catalogue.

I am really happy to have found this topic here! Am I right about the fact there are only three printings for the 5 lepta issue? I am not sure yet. My only Large Head Hermes stamp is a 5 lepta and has a control number on back, unfortunately half gone.

Should I directly conclude it's the 1875-1880 issue, or could I extend the research a bit more? I don't like when things are too easy...

Any expert thoughts on my stamp appreciated!

Captain Stamp...
It looks like a first Athens printing 1861-62 (Hellas 11I).

Oh, thanks for the identification! Is there any rarer printings for the 5L?

That figure on back (bottom of 5) looks very circular for 1861-62

Looks more more like Scott 18 consecutive printing figure on back
