On October 19, 2005 Singapore issued a booklet of ten, local rate (23c) self-adhesive stamps depicting the Malayan colugo. The stamps were issued to recognize the HSBC Tree Top Walk, Central Catchment Nature Reserve. From Wikipedia, "The Sunda flying lemur (Galeopterus variegatus) or Sunda colugo, also known as the Malayan colugo, is a species of colugo....(It) can be found throughout Southeast Asia. The Sunda flying lemur is not a lemur and does not fly. Instead, it glides as it leaps among trees." |

This January 18, 1995, 50c stamp of South Africa was issued to promote tourism in the Eastern Transvaal province (area highlighted in white on the stamp). Purportedly depicted on this stamp are desert warthogs (Phacocoerus aethiopicus). According to Wikipedia, recent studies indicate that these animals would actually be the common warthog (Phacochoerus africanus), as the South African subspecies of desert warthog has been extinct since around 1865. Desert warthog range is now limited to Ethiopia and Somalia. |

On January 30, 1997 Spain issued this 32 peseta, endangered fauna stamp (Sc #2878) depicting a common genet (Genetta genetta). The genet is an African, cat-like carnivore. From Wikipedia, The common genet is the only genet present in Europe and occurs in the Iberian Peninsula and France...It was brought from the Maghreb to the Mediterranean region as a semi-domestic animal about 1000-1500 years ago, and from there spread to southern France and Italy." |
