Resurrecting this thread from a few months back so that I could share a few interesting items. Illustrated here are five examples of what Yvert et Tellier call "experimental vignettes"... stamps designed and engraved for the express purpose of testing printing machines, in this case, the TD6 press. There are about twenty-three known color varieties of this test stamp, which were printed in or about 1960. They were designed and engraved by Pierre Gandon. The butterfly shown is labeled " Papilio supremus", which is an older name for the Goliath Birdwing, now called Ornithoptera goliath, a native of Indonesia. The butterfly in life is green, yellow and black, so the second stamp is closest to the natural coloring. Shown in order are Y&T numbers PS2A, PS3, PS8, PS8C and PS8D.      |
