The Lammergeier, or Bearded Vulture (Gypaetus barbatus aureus) eats mainly carrion and lives and breeds on crags in high mountains in southern Europe, North Africa, Southern Africa. This stamp was designed by naturalist, author and illustrator Patrick Suiro, combined engraved by Georges Bétemps and photogravure, and issued by France on September 22, 1984, Scott No. 1938, Y&T No. 2337. Note: According to legend, the Greek playwright Aeschylus was killed when a tortoise was dropped on his head by a Lammergeier which mistook the his bald pate for a stone.

The stamp is from the Federated States of Micronesia which is basically the island group labelled as the Caroline Islands in the map above.

Some posters seem to have drifted away from the original purpose of this thread, which was to include the Latin names in the text, in order to facilitate future searches in the database.

Does anyone have a Scott number for Fifa's Poland Pinus strobus stamp (p.1)? All I could find was that it was issued in 1991. This pine occurs in Canada also (we call it White Pine) and I think we issued a stamp for it but without the Latin name.
