The stamp shows a reconstruction of Aegirocassis benmoulai, a giant filter-feeding anomalocaridid preserved in the Fezouata Formation in southeastern Morocco. It lived during Early Ordovician (ca. 475 million years ago).

The minisheet features Livyatan melvillei, an extinct whale similar in size to the modern sperm whale. The fossil remains of this species were discovered in the coastal desert of Peru and were dated at ca. 10 - 9 millions of years before present.

Mastodons are any species in the genus Mammut, distantly related to elephants, that lived during the late Miocene or late Pliocene up to their extinction at the end of the Pleistocene. The stamp depicts the teeth of one of the last European mastodons discovered in Slovenia.

Here is an image of a stamp depicting a scientist using a microscope, and slides of fossils, designed by Hatem El Mekki (1918-2003), printed by photogravure, and issued by Tunisia on March 21, 1974 to publicize the 6th African Congress of Micropaleontology, Scott No. 627.
