Here is the fourth and final miniature sheet issued by Finland for the Finlandia '88 Stamp Exhibition in Helsinki. These four sheets are all transportation themed. This one (Facit #BL4) featuring aviation was issued on June 2, 1988. Each of the four stamps has a colored frame which matches its route flown as illustrated on the map on the sheet. Note that the Breguet 14 biplane has a swastika emblem on its tail. This emblem has nothing to do with Germany, nazism, or the third reich. It was the emblem of the Finnish Air Force from its inception, and it has been used until quite recently, when the decision was made to discontinue the tradition. Breguet 14 biplane (Finnish Air Force 1920) Douglas DC 3 (1947) Junkers F 13 (1930) Douglas DC 10-30 (Finnair 1975) |

On November 9, 1994 Iceland issued this 100 kr stamp (Facit #850) to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the ICAO (International Civil Aviation Organization, UN). Stamp depicts an Icelandair jet. Airliner is either a Boeing 757, or a Boeing 737-400 which Icelandair was using for its international flights in 1994. |

France issued Scott C67 (Yvert PA68) in 2005 to honor the career of Adrienne Bolland (1895-1975). After racking up gambling debts, she went to work as a pilot for René Caudron and soon after flew across the English Channel (1920). Caudron saw marketing potential and then sent her to South America to promote his aeroplanes. She flew her Caudron G3 -- the rather flimsy aircraft depicted on the stamp and underpowered at 80HP -- through the Andes from Argentina to Chile in 1921, the first woman to do so. After a few years the French awarded her the Legion of Honor. She also set a woman's record in 1925 for most loops in an hour: 212. Imagine, makes me queasy just thinking about it. At the left is the stamp as designed, showing her clearing the lower mountain peaks as she did in real life. At the right is the so-called "touching the mountain" variant which Maury gives as PA68b, but which is unremarked by Scott. Fun, sort of a poor man's grounded Jenny I suppose. |

Hi Jleb:
Attractive and interesting stamp. Is the "touching the mountain" stamp a design variety or a printing shift downward? Almost looks like the stamp on the left is a printing shift upward.
Is it going to prove to be more difficult to find?
