To commemorate the 500th anniversary of the discovery of America, four countries, the USA, Italy, Portugal, and Spain, each issued six souvenir sheets. Together, the six sheets of each country reproduce the 16 U.S. stamps originally issued in 1893 to mark the 400th anniversary of Columbus's voyage. I have three of the Spanish souvenir sheets and will share them here, along with high-resolution images of the stamp reproductions. Here is the first SS with replica of the high value USA stamp features Columbus. |

The 500th anniversary of Columbus voyage, issued by Israel on April 26, 1992. The stamp features Columbus ships. In the background of the stamp appears a section from the Perpetual Almanac, composed by the Jewish astronomer Abraham Zacuto. During his voyages, Christopher Columbus carried the Latin translation of this work. On the left side of the tab, an astrolabe is depicted, a device used for astronomical navigation to measure the altitude of celestial bodies. |

Discovery of America, EUROPA stamp issued by Spain on May 3, 1982. The stamp commemorates the Discovery of America, placing Christopher Columbus at its center through a symbolic composition of a globe mounted on a ship (caravel), representing his transatlantic voyage and the encounter with the "New World". The sketch of La Hispaniola marks one of the first lands reached during his expedition, while the stylized signature reinforces his personal role in the enterprise. The inscription "Dio Colon" ("Columbus gave") emphasizes the idea that Columbus's voyage "gave" Spain access to new lands, highlighting him as the navigator who opened new routes and reshaped global history. |
