Today is Three King's Day, the 6th of January. In many parts of the world a day in which children go caroling from door to door and collect donations for the needy. They are dressed in lovely robes and bear gifts as did the Magi for the Child Jesus. The children are called Sternsinger, Starsingers, because the Star led the Wise Men to Bethlehem. The Adoration of the Magi by R. van der Weyden (mid 15th century) shows Caspar, Melchior and Balthasar in Bethlehem.

Johann Heinrich Pestalozzi (1746-1827) was a Swiss pedagogue, educational reformer and the founder of several educational institutions in Switzerland. Pestalozzi is given much of the credit for virtually eradicating illiteracy in Switzerland by 1830. Here are images of the four semi-postal (charity) stamps in a set honoring the educator, and issued by Switzerland on December 1, 1927, Scott Nos. B41-B44, plus an image of a detail from a painted portrait of Johann Heinrich Pestalozzi which was probably the model for the designs of two of these stamps.
