The nice thing about the thin, small, rounded points is that it is easy to slip between stamps in a pile to pick out just the one you want. I suspect pointy tongs would be even better at that.
Just thinking... do you use tongs over hand, or under hand? I saw a guy using the pointies like a pair of chopsticks at a bourse once. (overhand) That feels completely alien to me.
