Being slightly colour-blind, I can't tell which is which, especially as my screen colours may not match yours.. But here's 4 of the colours from my 1979 Stanley Gibbons Stamp Colour Key, which does not a "straw". |

thanks BlackJag, it's a start... and a reminder : a friend has one Stanley Gibbons Stamp Colour Key There is a difference (tint) between BlackJag submitted colors and my friend's color key (maybe because of the scan...) Hope my eyes don't cheat me to much. Here are my suggestions : 1 : more ochre (not listed) than yellow-ochre 2 : yellow ochre #113 3 : with my friend's color key, I would say more an olive bistre #113b than sage green 4 : greenish yellow #113iv other opinions? What about straw? How this color looks like? |

I too have been dealing with this conundrum, looking for a Unitrade 92iii Edward V "straw". I've bought a few that could be that issue by date (late), and some that were labelled "straw", but none have me convinced yet. I use the Gibbons colour key, and it is frustrating that it does not list "straw", or that catalogue publishers use colour names that are not listed. From what I have seen online (and there is room for error with various scanners and monitors), "straw" is browner than the ochre/bistre stamps - most like koala's stamp #1. Also check these out (scroll down). And if anyone has a used one to spare . . . http://www.saskatoonstamp.com/catal...Plate+Blockshttp://www.nalbandstamp.com/canspec.htm |

Thank Stray FeathersHere what I got from those 2 suggested web site : At the Saskatoon Stamps, I took a sample of the 4cents (#110) and the 10cents (#113) and #113 from Nalbandian site (the only stamp available), all with the given color description Those from Sakatoon Stamps were all carefully resized so as to avoid a distorsion of the stamps and color except the one from Nalbandian web site which couldn't be resized without loosing it's properties 1) Saskatoon Stamps 1 : Olive Yellow 2 : Yellow Ochre Dry 3 : Yellow Ochre Wet 4 : Olive Bistre (pair) 5 : Straw 6 : another Yellow Ochre Wet Nalbandian stamps The only one available : Yellow Ochre some of you have better eyes than mine... how would you classify my 4 stamps at the top of this topic?? The error margin might be important since the stamps samples are from 2 different web site... quite confusing |

To me, your stamp number 1 is the mysterious one as per color. I would say number 2 is yellow ochre, number 3 olive bister (or perhaps sage green) and, number 4 straw. To me, the stamp in this post is straw https://goscf.com/t/22347 |

If you want to have a real chance of identifying the admiral colours, I highly recommend buying a copy of the Morris colour guide. He uses actual paint chips and I find it much better than the Gibbons colour chart. |

In a recent auction lot I found a copy of Richard M. Morris' booklet entitled "Color Guides for the Admiral Issue of Canada". It was published by Pittsboro Philatelics in Norfolk Massachusettes in 2000. Perhaps they have some copies left or there may be one in your BNAPS, RPSC libraries. It has small color chips that should help with your problem. I'd scan it but the booklet suggests that you don't expose the chips to harsh light.
Their email: pittphil@mindspring.com |

Hi koala: I cannot find a web site for Pittsboro so perhaps they no longer exist. Following is their address as it appears in the booklet: 7 Malcolm Street, Norfolk, Massachusetts, 02056-1411 Telephone 508-520-0953
The author also lived in Norfolk. Maybe he was involved with the company. Morris was also on the board of BNAPS. Perhaps they have a copy in their library.
Sorry I couldn't be more helpful, but good luck in yout search. |
