I need to identify Great Britain stamps from 1840 - about 1980. Scott has an iPhone app where I can purchase the GB cat Part 1 and 2 for $19.99. Has anyone tried these? Can you think of pros or cons of doing it this way rather than purchasing a print copy? Thanks!

I also see that I can purchase the Stanley Gibbons 2013 Great Britain Concise Stamp Catalogue for $30.99. Since all of my stamps are GB Commonwealth - would that be a better investment?

Holy cow... just noticed for the SG there is the concise (not sure what the heck that means pertaining to this...) and then there are the regular versions, Countries A-B, C-L and then M-Z and each are $28.99!! I SUCK at geography but I'm pretty sure I would need all three for identifying my entire hoard!

I hesitate to bring this up, because iphones I don't do, but, if you upgrade to a new iphone, which my daughter tells me is quite frequent, can you move, or install, the app on the new device? I also wonder if the screen large enough?

yakboomer - very valid point! I'm not 100% sure if it would transfer to a new phone...definitely would need to find that out! As far as the screen being large enough, that would depend. If the app allowed you to view the stamps full-screen then it would be great but if you can only view a whole page, it definitely wouldn't! Thank you for your insight, I will need to find these things out!

If you upgrade to another iOS device, you'll be able to move the catalog.

But if you move to Android or another mobile platform, you won't be able to migrate.

You should read Apastuszak's Threads in the "Supply & Software" section of the board. There are several, starting with these...

I just don't see myself paying hundreds of dollars for a fancy phone and then paying hundreds of dollars more every time Apple does an upgrade. And the prices for the Ipads, cost more than my computer. Do I pay $800 for an Ipad or $500 for a upgradable laptop with more computing power and a bigger screen.

Guess I am just old-fashioned and cheap. Plus think of all the money I save . . . to buy stamps with.

SG is best to identify stamps of the British Commonwealth, but Scott is the North American catalogue...

Yes, but Stanley Gibbons is much more widely used (and much more informative) for any Commonwealth related stamps.

Do SG and Scott also offer their catalogue for Android users?

No Android yet -- that's part of the problem. If you buy for iOS then switch to Android, you lose.

I would say go for it if you have an ipad and the app works for an ipad. I found however (I own an iphone) that most things like the scott catalog is so small on the iphone that it is almost impossible to read. I even have some trouble with ebay auctions etc being too small. However I think on a tablet that it would be wonderful!

I could see for an I-Pad but I wouldn't want to try and see a good scan on my I-Phone's tiny screen.
