I am preparing for a local show this weekend and will definitely have a list (prioritized) also bring tongs & magnifier. Usually I go on the last day early so that I can get the total show cancels. These usually support the show and sponsoring club. I also try to get to the USPS table for a cancel. I purchase 1 or 2 current stationary pieces and apply the appropriate cancels. First shows can be overwhelming. Walking around to get the lay of the land is good. Look for 1/2 price boxes. That $10ca or $15cat classic can be picked up in decent condition for less and you feel good. Watch your budget, that displayed set of Columbians or Zepps will wipe out the check book. I seem to always have a minimal anxiety attack when first walking in, less & less now but still.. Everything that was mentioned previously is appropriate (thongs??)) just have a good time. The next show you attend will be easier and better. In future shows, seek out & renew dealer contacts. They will remember you, even if only an annual event and will bargain softer if you become a repeat customer.

I concur with the consensus that the first post is an excellent primer for shows.

I have a few amplifications, as I have been to shows for 30 years plus. Its old school, but I enjoy them.

In general, I have found most dealers willing hagglers at $25 and above and I have found some good bargains.

Specifically, I would ask them first what the catalog value is and what % they would sell it for. Always have cash in your hand, or mention it--because dead presidents work wonders.

But it is a mixed lot, so don't get bummed if a certain small % of dealers want full catalog value. Just move on.

Last show that I went, I asked a dealer for his best price on two old Newfoundland stamps. He said $10,000. When I played dumb and asked him to show me the Unitrade catalog value and then let him work out that his price was 150% of catalog value--I just politely moved on.
Just down the row, I found another dealer who had a stamp that he offered 30% of catalog value and I gave him cash, with no sales tax.

but mostly have fun and learn

to stlspidey:

I'll be attending the WALPEX Stamp Show in Lexington Ma. It's an annual show held by Waltham Stamp Club. It is one of 2 shows I attempt to get to each year. It is quite a large show, over 50 tables of dealers. I really need to prepare as there are dealers from all New England States, NY & some further. There is a second show I attend in the spring @ Boxborough held by Northeast Federation of Stamp Clubs. Both good shows. In future I am planning (&saving) for the International Show 2016 in NY.
