egCollector you mentioned going to a local stamp store to purchase stamps. You are aware there are lot's of sources available to secure stamps. ebay, Craig's List, Online Stamp Company's and stores. Members with stamps to sell or trade. Garage and Estate sales just to name a few.

Which of these is hinged ?

I got your point and I will keep it in my mind specially that I found in the stamp catalogs I read that there is no different prices for MNH and MH but only Mint and Used.

TinMan
Yes I am aware of those resources but when I go to my local store shop I also have the luxury to ask many questions about the stamps I am buying ..... I spend around 2 hours every Saturday with the shop owner. He is one of the big stamp dealers in Egypt and he is a member of the Egyptian Stamp Society so in addition to buying I take a look at many collections and sets in different conditions and the guy is very helpful and answers all my questions about any topic I ask about.

Thanks for the advice TinMan and I have bought some used stamps yesterday but till next weekend I dont have the time to scan and post pics but will sure do.

For the collector starting out, if you're not sure which to collect (mint, mint-hinged, or used) I think a pragmatic way of starting may be to let your budget inform you.

If your budget is fairly limited, you will simply be able to get a lot more stamps if you collect used. If you have a more generous budget, then mint becomes more possible. You may wish to consider the implications of trying to complete a mint collection of something, though; will you be able to complete it in mint condition, or will you be forced to buy used in order to be able to afford to complete it? If so, I would argue (and this is only my opinion) you may be better off collecting used from the start.

I am personally biased towards used. I think it is much harder to complete an XF collection of used than mint, because not only do you have to find the same level of colour & centering and so on, you also need to have the attractive postmark which increases the level of scarcity significantly. So I like the challenge and the thrill of the hunt myself, and finding beautiful town cancels on VF/XF specimens is how I get my jollies.

But you will have to determine what is important to you. If you're not sure, start with the most economical option and see if you find it rewarding. If not, make a change and you've not really lost much.

Thank you JR1960 ... I agree with all what you said. I will start a used collection of the Egyptian stamps before 1952 and will see what this will take me to
