Our children have enjoyed books from the Imagination Library. There are no financial/income requirements and our twins received a free book monthly until they turned 5 and our 4-year-old will continue to receive a free book until next June when she turns five. It's a great program and my wife and I support it through donations via United Way.
I think a big part of the challenge lies in Imagination Library not having a good program of making sure its mailing list is current. Of course this is in part to them not paying for the returned mail and therefore not getting the ones returned to know the addresses are no good.
But it is a conundrum. I hate to see the books shredded when they could be put to good use. However, if they start returning them for free or donating them to pre-k, what's the next organization that will want its returned items donated?
